Women's Hockey

Looks like Team USA and pals is going to destroy the college division again: https://www.instagram.com/p/BIGwAIKjVQg/

Maybe one day there will be a way to watch :(

Hell of a team, looks like they won 6-0 in the final https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CoKC_tqXEAARKXp.jpg:large

NY Riveters will be playing their 2016-17 season in Newark, NJ at the Barnabas Hockey House!

Anyone know anything about the arena? I'm too far away to see any games in person, but I'm nosy.

Less seating capacity than Aviator, but it's a million times easier to get to on public transport and since the Devils train there everything's in pretty good shape. The Isobel Cup Final games there went well so hopefully the regular season will too.

On the one hand, I'm grumbling about yet another team calling itself New York while taking advantage of playing in New Jersey. On the other hand, I will DEFINITELY be checking out some games this year, because it'll be so much more convenient, and they're my faves.

That reminds me, are any nonnies buying season tickets for their local NWHL team (if they have one ofc). I'm kind of on the fence because I want to give them all my money but I'm not sure how many games I'll actually be able to go to. My friend that I went with last year has a new job and isn't free on weekends very much, and the new location for the Pride is more out of the way for me... I feel like I'm coming up with excuses but I just don't want to buy the season tickets and then not go to the games. But I want to support them!!

Pretend that first sentence has a question mark at the end of it oops

I want to buy season tickets, but I'm also hoping to move to a new city sometime in the middle of the season, so I'm holding off. Also the added parking/public transit fees that come with the new Riveters location (plus their tickets being the most expensive), have kind of soured me.

I don't live anywhere near the team I support but I seriously considered buying tickets last year anyway. I'm a ticket holder for an NHL team, though, and I spend beaucoups of money on hockey tickets in general, so tossing a couple of hundred dollars at them for season tickets I won't use as support isn't really a big deal to me.

I live nowhere near a team and I bought a season ticket to my favorite team last year just as a show of support; only used one of them when I flew in for a game, but felt good about the purchase anyway.

Ugh, parking for the Isobel Cup finals there cost me more than my ticket to the game. I'm less than enthusiastic about this move.

How much did you pay? There are $15 (and maybe $10?) parking lots a few blocks away if you're willing to walk an extra couple of minutes. And those lots are still in the safer parts of Newark.

da

Yeah, considering when I went to a game in Brooklyn last season I ended up in an Uber, this is probably cheaper if I just take the train.

The NWHL is partnering with You Can Play!!

(although Rylan saying that "the hockey community can proudly say we are the most inclusive professional sport in the world" ...... I hope that's a platitude that she hopes, by saying it publicly, will help make it more true, not something she's un-self-aware enough to actually believe :/)

Exciting news! I have to admit to being really skeptical about the NHL YCP videos, but it feels different with the NWHL, where there are out players who will probably be speaking in some of the videos. I know the CWHL has an existing partnership with them (though I have to admit some difficulty in following them as an organization), so I assume it'll follow much of the same format.

(And haha, yeah, that is an incredibly laughable thing to say and I sure hope she doesn't mean it.)

Considering Ashley Johnson's proposal video is public on youtube, I hope they can find a few players to speak out!

Nice to see a few LGBT players be appointed as ambassadors rather than it being all straight people for once. Hope this doesn't turn out like the CWHL's partnership, where iirc they had trouble getting LGBT players and even allies on record to make a video.

Do you have more info regarding the CWHL's partnership? Was there ever word for why people didn't want to make videos?

The NWHL is having a fan vote for this season's jersey designs.

Re: Women's Hockey

(Anonymous) 2016-08-05 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not thrilled about this, mostly because I liked last season's designs and don't understand why they're changing, but I voted anyway. I wish the Whale hadn't paired their cool wave design with the worse color, but for most of the jerseys it felt like there was an obvious right answer. Maybe I just have really specific jersey tastes.

Why would they even consider replacing that gorgeous Riveters logo with that crappy Rangers knock-off?

I do like the switch to a red background though.

+1 That Riveters logo is so iconic, and instead they might choose a cheap copy of the Rangers? Hard pass.

I'm amused by them switching the jerseys after they sold a bunch of Amanda Kessel jerseys in the old Riveters iteration.
