there's a blogger that refers to Auston Matthews as "mijo" all the time and i hate it so much it's like a worse version of that "my smol son" thing

That's very :///

Without knowing who this blogger is, I feel like there's a lot of white people in this fandom already holding him up as their perfect POC fave that are going to end up disappointed. afaik he's never even said the words "I am Latino" in an interview.

... I agree that their token-esque objectification is going to backfire, but he's definitely talked about his heritage to the media before. People don't always use general terms when they're talking about themselves, specifically.

He's mentioned things like his mom cooking traditional Mexican food in Switzerland a fair amount.

he apparently liked one of the shitty anti-kaepernick tweets and someone (white) on my TL was like, "i only like jt brown, even auston let me down!" ... like, in touch with his mexican heritage or not, literally nothing about him suggested he would be better than your average nhler who is terrible about these things?

Seriously, the dude is from Scottsdale. Scottsdale and some of the suburbs around it (Paradise Valley, Carefree, Cave Creek, etc) is, incidentally, also where most of the actual Coyotes players live, because that is the part of the Phoenix metro where the rich people are. He's a hockey bro who grew up very well off, surrounded by lots of other very well off people, in touch with his heritage or not.

I saw that reaction too, and found it worse than him liking the original tweet, tbh. POC have no responsibility to white people to act as perfect woke angels, and he's never even said or done anything that would indicate that he cares about social justice. She was soooo disappointed but 100% of that was just her projecting onto him how she (a white person) thinks he should act. Ugh.

Yeah, mte. Like, you aren't saying anything about all the white players liking the same tweets but complaining how your pet POC let you down? Intra-community, yeah, it can be more personally hurtful more when POC you admire don't "get it," but for white people to talk about being "disappointed" with POC for their internalized racism and how they've dealt with living in a racist society is really gross. Whether he even is a POC or not is kinda beside the point, it's awful of her to have that expectation of someone just so she can feel good and "progressive" about having a perfect POC fav.

Yeah, Matthews apparently liked some shitty stuff and calling him out on that is legit imo, but FUCK YEAH CALL ALL THE FOR-SURE WHITE BOYS OUT ON THEIRS TOO.

(Fwiw, I don't think Matthews is *meaningless* POC representation-wise, but I tend to think he's sort of partial credit/"it's complicated", particularly since he's basically white-passing.)

/disclaimer: i'm white

I kind of got uncomfortable too with the projection on Buff and Seth Jones about how they'd feel about the Torts comments, though to a lesser extent than with all of the projection on Matthews about literally everything. It might be awkward for them, but tbh chances are they agree with Torts. Black/POC isn't a monolith, hell even in the NFL there are a lot of black players speaking out against Kapernik, and that's their right even if I disagree.

Kaepernick, sorry for the butchering of his name

Eh, speaking for myself, I'm well aware that it's actually extremely likely that Buff and Jones agrees with Torts, so for me it was less about "omg my pure perfect oppressed fav" and just, really personally upsetting that there could potentially be a black player in that situation. But yeah idk if you were talking about meme or if we saw the same namespace people talk about it, but some of it was pretty gross, I saw someone tweet that they hoped Jones would sit for the anthem with CBJ so they could see Torts' head explode over whether or not to bench his best d-man, which...... ugh.

Yeah, I was thinking more of what I saw on my TL. I was scrolling through and all day I just wanted to scream "POC players are not here for you to earn social justice points by needlessly defending them! They are not woobies you need to protect! They are not props for your narrative regardless of your good intentions!"

What gets me about this is that if you're going to use a nickname that denotes his heritage (I don't think I would tbh) why not use the one we know he already has (Papi)?

Well, you see, mijo combines cutesy tumblr speak with proving they know, like, at least ten words of Spanish. Very creative and cultural of them. /s

where i live, "mijo" is a pretty common affectionate term (that occasionally gets used for acquaintances) so if the tumblr users in question happened to actually *be* latinx i'd probably give them the credit of the doubt.

but yeah, i strongly dislike "my smol son"-type shit, and in most cases "mijo" for matthews is going to annoy me even more. it creeps me out in ways i can't articulate.

/white, i live in a majority-latinx city and a *really* majority-latinx neighborhood

As someone who is half Latinx, I definitely haven't felt more comfortable in fandom since Matthews got drafted. At least the white people in my life know they're annoying the shit out of me when they do this type of stuff "ironically". This weird, earnest racial ally stuff has been... interesting. Incredibly irritating, when I see people blatantly ignore being told (politely, calmly, by people who are way more patient than I am) why the way they talk about him comes across so poorly.

I also can't quite explain what about this phenomenon bothers me so much. The closest I figured is that I just really, really don't like the objectifican that's, like, fundamental in fic fandom when it comes to minority players.

Considering they have edited to post to say just "Auston Matthews, precious", I'm assuming they were just oblivious to the connotations of calling a half-Mexican guy a "bean", but wow, yikes.
