Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I wish these two authors would stop cowriting, because the quality of work goes down when they do.

Re: Fandom Venting

which authors, what work?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
NA, but I'm guessing gdgdbaby and daisysusan, based on the last conversation I remember meme having about their joint fic and that they're the only collab in the last couple days.

Re: Fandom Venting

Yeah. I don't know if it's writing style or a skill difference or what, but it's something.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, I like both their fic individually, but I think it reads like they edit less when they write together, maybe.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Or they're scared on stepping on toes and only editing the bits they wrote, which means the editing isn't seen with a consistent eye.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
That's solved with an outside beta, though.

Being honest with your creative partner would also work. "I do this, you do that, someone/both of us go over it after so it looks consistent" is a pretty workable dynamic, in my experience. A beta can't force them to blend if they aren't willing.

I reread their Larkin/Werenski fic from last month and that read to me as an editing issue with the overall story arc for sure that they didn't or couldn't fix.

In my experience with cowriting (albeit in a TV fandom) you have to be open to your partner saying "this doesn't work" sometimes. And you have to let them edit and fix what you've written too.

I don't think they have a notable skill difference. I chronically got them confused when they first showed their heads, and now I only can through sheer force of will (+gd's extra porn. Wouldn't have guessed they'd actually be incompatible in one fic. Too similar to fill different needs in a fic, not quite identical enough for it to be seamless?

I think gdgdbaby is at least more consistent. Their cowriting isn't seamless, that's definitely noticeable. It might be the issue.
