Re: Let's Name the Las Vegas Team

They'd call themselves Hawks, I'm sure. There's no rule requiring teams to have different nicknames.

I have no love for the Blackhawks, but I can't imagine a new team beating them out in that bit of #branding.

Re: Let's Name the Las Vegas Team

They don't have to beat them? There's lots of teams whose name is shortened to Hawks already.

Not in the NHL. Which is why it would be ridiculous.

It might be ridiculous to pick it for the team, but if they do name the team the Desert Hawks, they're going to get called the Hawks, not the Deserts. Precisely because there are already other Hawks out there, and it rolls off the tongue much easier.

DA

I don't know how big of a deal that is. Merchandise would likely just have have "Nighthawks" or "Vegas" on it anyway so we're pretty much just talking hashtags and other common usage. Is that really a big branding issue?

If everything about your team's brand looks and sounds like a store brand knockoff of a pre-existing team, it's not going to be a good look. It's painfully uncreative, even for an NHL team.

I think you're stretching the fashion metaphor too far. I just can't picture the Blackhawks as haute couture. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Marian Hossa walking a cat walk in something slinky.

... I mean, it's not a really a metaphor. There are branding mimicries of anything being sold. Just not sure why a new sports team trying to build its own independent image and fanbase wants to play that game. You can't trick fans over because you have the same colors or name; just look at the Pens fans and Bruins fans (and soon to be Vegas fans?) arguing over who the true black and gold team is.
