Re: AO3 hockey stats: a July 2015 retrospective
From: (Anonymous)It feels to me like there's a difference in length of fic. I feel like we get more shorter stuff now, but I don't know if that's just my perception.
Re: AO3 hockey stats: a July 2015 retrospective
From: (Anonymous)So I went and looked, and this is what I got:
Average:
July 2015 - 5041
July 2016 - 6670
Median:
July 2015 - 3200
July 2016 - 3100
The median is less sensitive to outliers in the data (ie, it doesn't care if someone posts a 500k word Jets fic), so IMO it's a better measure of the middle in this scenario. And there has been a drop in the median, but only a very slight one. Meanwhile the average has gone up.
If you're avoiding K/T fic these days, though, that might add to the perception that fic is getting shorter. Of the top ten fics for wordcount in July 2016, four of them were K/T, including the top three. (The other pairings were Marner/McDavid/Strome, Carter/Richards, Kessel/Bozak, McDavid/Ekblad, Braid/Draisaitl, and a Devils ensemble fic - so, a lot of recent draftee fic.)

From: (Anonymous)Thanks for looking into that! That makes a lot of sense.
