Re: Fic Discussion-You and Me of the 10,000 Wars

Fair warning, it's K/T. I don't read that pairing obv but I like sahiya's work, so when I see she has new fic I just read it for the writing and nothing else. Anyway, the writing was good. It helps if you just skip the PKane chapters (among everything else his career path is about as plausible as Ryan Lochte becoming the head of the UN), and pretend the fic is about Toews coming to terms with his life after hockey and making peace with it. Those parts are great. The sections with Sid are lovely and sad, and she's writing a separate fic about him in that verse, which is exciting.

She tends to load on the whole Toews grows an organic garden and cares about the environment thing tho, which can be annoying, ymmv: “No, I didn't check my email this morning. I thought we said we didn't want flowers.” They were wasteful, Jonny had always thought. He'd wanted a zero carbon footprint wedding, but his mother had told him in no uncertain terms that that wasn't going to happen unless he planned it himself. So he'd settled for trying to make it as waste-free as possible and making a sizable donation to his favorite environmental organization instead.

Anyway, this post is not an endorsement of K/T fic, I just wanted to say how I liked the parts I did, pls lets not let this devolve into a wank thread lol.

Cause of this comment, I skimmed through for the Crosby parts. Lovely and sad is right, why did I do that to myself? Now I need her fic about him.

I ended up reading enough about Kane to believe that was some serious tampering he was doing regarding signing Strome.

I did not hate this story. I read the k/t parts because I can't scan for shit and it was easier to just read the whole thing. I would say the k/t storyline was innocuous enough that my brain could parse them as kind of original-ish characters that I didn't want to stab myself (they're old and not really hockey players anymore so much as they're dudes trying to find themselves after leaving the one thing they've always know sort of thing)

I unexpectedly really enjoyed the Kane + Stan Bowman parts which were few and far between but read really true to me. Also I can kind of imagine Connor McD coming out exactly the way me did which I enjoyed as well.

SA.

Also the author always makes a point to say the Toews is drinking gluten free beer. Which made me laugh.

Toews' therapy hour is the most boring part of the fic for me, and Crosby's sad future of not remembering winning the Cup was just too ham-fisted imo. I enjoy the post-career relationship navigation and learning to do different things, though, even though the author is playing incredibly fast and loose with how things work.

I got thrown out of it really early by a couple of things, one was where Kane thought something about same sex marriage being legal for me than 10 years. If same sex marriage was legalised in 2005 and the fic is set in 2027 shouldn't that be more than 20 years.

And so Kane is just living in Canada already, I know he wouldn't need a job but he must have some kind of right of residency, and I would have liked at least a mention of the Oilers sorting out a work permit. I liked in that Landeskog/Briere fic someone at least asked about Landeskog being allowed to work.

There was definitely some suspension of disbelief required given the super obvious tampering and some other not super well thought out things that happened.

But. I'd say it's the best thing I've read this month. That bar certainly ain't high. But there it is.

Kane is American. Same sex marriage wasn't legal in NY until 2011 or Illinois until 2014, and it wasn't legal in the whole of the US until last year. Maybe that's what he meant?

Possibly, but in the fic he was living in Canada and thinking about marrying a Canadian, presumably in Canada.
