THE RULES

I understand how it's annoying if your fave is made into the big bad asshole who's always being mean to poor sweet other guy, but if it's a mutual dislike where they both irritate each other equally... what's there to be upset about?

I think this fandom is touchy in general. Authors have gotten shit for writing established ships in too-difficult relationships, even when the story has a hopeful or happy ending. So I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that people avoid the trope for that reason.

I also think team loyalties come into play with authors as well, where maybe they don't want to write their fave as a huge asshole. And that's before considering that if their fave's popular, potential backlash. If he's not, 30% of all fic for him now features him as an asshole. Granted, pure hatesex isn't my trope. I just like it on the way to friends-->lovers.
