Re: Fic Discussion- kept just like we were, oflights

From: (Anonymous)
I liked this a lot. Usually nonlinearity bothers me, but as this one was only two narratives spliced together fairly evenly, it worked for me. I liked how mutually nervous they were in the pre-get-together, though some of the stuff with Nate and his family seemed kind of weird. (It kind of reminded me of the stereotypical prom date teasing, if that makes sense?) And the story itself was cute. One of my problems with fandom in general (and this one in particular) is that there are a lot of get-together stories and very few stories that show what it's like when they're actually together, but this one did a good job of illustrating how it all worked once they got there.

Yes, agree! That's what I liked about these two narratives too, I felt they contrasted nicely. Cole Harbour was like this happy summer bubble aside from the pining, so traditionally once they get together, everything's fine and they ride off into the sunset. But then the other narrative proves that's not true, especially with the obstacles they have.

It makes me want more about the in-between, like dealing with being far apart/Sid's slump/the Avs meltdown, but I like angst.

I really liked most of this. I thought that switching between their POV's worked really well for the most part and I liked seeing Nate interact with Sid and everybody else quite a bit. Though I do agree with Nate's family, his sister was a bit of a typical sister with all the advice tropey thing we see so often in hockey fics, but, it was like one scene so I didn't mind much

My one real problem was the end- there were a few hints in the playoff run bits that Nate was nursing some angst, I figured it was his shitty year and feeling conflicted watching another team, even your boyfriend's, win the Stanley Cup. But then, literally paragraphs away from the end Nate goes and says he's not even sure they are actually, truly together? Like, what? That's a huge bomb to drop on us so quickly with no *real* resolution to it. In retrospect, oflights didn't hint at this very well at all because it came out of nowhere for me.
