Is Team North America really planning to make McDavid captain? Because that's some bullshit if they do.

I assume the captain will be one of the older players. Like Nuge or Couturier. It would make so much more sense than McDavid.

He's not provably the best player, even. He wasn't the best player on Team Canada at Worlds. And a lot of guys on that team have been captains at the international level, some multiple times, but the GM and coach are his, so....

Who would you have over him for best player? Actual question. I tend to fall into the "he is probably the best, and he will be the best, but he has to actually do it first."

Gaudreau comes to mind first - I'm very unconvinced McDavid would have kept up his points rate, it kept falling, and Gaudreau was just under a PPG over a full season. Mackinnon could, Schiefele could. Anyone playing in the top six could, including Eichel, possibly Larkin, though that one is a lot less likely. Maybe Saad. And maybe a top defenseman, so Rielly or Ekblad, possibly Jones, though I think that's a long shot.

McDavid had great numbers in 45 games, but he didn't even play them consecutively (fatigue is a real phenomena), and he had a crazy high shooting percentage. Panarin also shot around 16%, but no one says he's going to do it again and somehow McDavid will.

He totally might be the best player! But he hasn't even captained his team internationally and lots of older players have.

Has it been made official or is this just a well-sourced rumor?

My money is still on Saad or RNH.

I guess I've come around to him being named Oilers captain fairly soon (it's inevitable, He's In Charge Now, leadership qualities, blah blah blah) but I really will be irritated if they make him Team NA captain. There's really no reason for him to be captain of that team when there are plenty of guys with just as much "leadership experience" or more, and it will pretty blatantly be McLellan/Chiarelli trying to promote their own player over others who might deserve it more. He hasn't even played a full season yet, ffs.

Except for Auston Matthews, who no one is suggesting for the C or an A, he has the fewest NHL games played.

Actually if I was one of the US players I'd be mad, ngl.

Notre Dame just announced that their captain next year is a goalie and I was like ??? Did not know that wasn't a universal rule.

I think the reason the NHL banned goalie captains was specifically because they spent too long yelling at the refs.

I know this tournament is all an NHL money grab and like doesn't actually mean anything but if/when they make him the captain I'm going to be annoyed on behalf of the US players. And Aaron Ekblad!! Who is McDavid's friend so probably doesn't care but would probably make more sense as a captain!!
