Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I'm so tired of fandom (twitter specifically today) and the obsession with "problematic." Please point me to somewhere in reality that can't be defined as problematic.

Yep Patrick Kane is probably a rapist. It's not a surprise he's employed by the NHL. There's nothing in his record that would prevent him from being employed by most businesses.

Torts is a little racist. So is one of the girls that shows up as a tangential friend of a friend of a friend on the weekends.

Half the freaking beat writers are mysoginsts. So are some of the old dudes that I work with.

I'm all for wanting things to be better. But I'm so tired of the doom and gloom of complaining. The world is full of problematic and I'm honestly not sure how hockey fandom should be different.

What's next? Are you going to go after PC culture and SJWs? Attack safe spaces and trigger warnings? Should I provide an alt-right checklist for you go through? You're really halfway there.

Alt-right? You have got to be fucking kidding me.

I don't think people think hockey fandom should be different. But sometimes when people feel overwhelmed by all the problematic things they see, it helps them to speak about them, even if it's so much shouting into the void. Likewise, it can suck if you just want to be able to cheer for your country's team in the World Cup of Hockey without feeling like you're committing a thought crime. I get it. I don't have a solution, but I've been on both ends of that stick, and it's not pleasant all around. Maybe take a break from twitter?

If you're having a hard time dealing with constant reminders of hockey's participation in rape culture, racism, etc, then consider unfollowing some people and blacklisting some tags.

Re: Fandom Venting

This literally comes off like all the old white people whining like: Why can't we just let there be racism/sexism/rapists walking free? I get tired of seeing all this WHINING about unjust situations where people are getting legitimately hurt! Can't they just leave me be and never advocate for justice and equity for all (no that isn't a typo I mean equity).

Like fine. How about we all stop complaining. Then all our rights can be slowly and systematically taken away even more, and more rapists can go free, and more radical racism and sexism can take place. But hey at least we stopped fucking complaining all the time.

Just avoid/black list the topics if you want to stick your head in the sand and ignore the real struggles people are going through.

I think that is the key, to make sure that by filtering stuff out/unfollowing some people you're not missing everything. It's a bit of a balancing act to find the right people who provide levity but will still talk about important topics. But of course that is a personal thing of the person opting in on following someone rather than the responsibility of the one posting content.

But I read the original post the opposite way as you. They're not trying to stick their head in the sand (which is why they pointed out certain topics) but they feel overwhelmed. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

Eh, I think you're giving too much credit. They minimized the topics people have been complaining about by saying, duh, don't you know anything about real life where this happens all the time? -- when, yeah, no shit, and we hate it in real life, too? The difference is meme/fandom knows nothing and has nothing to say about someone' racist friend of a friend, but hockey fandom has all heard of Tortorella and have an interest in things that happen in the hockey world. "Oh he's just a little racist but everyone is" sounds a little too much either like a lack of empathy or a "don't bring real life issues into my sports!!" Like, I get that some fans who hate Torts are obviously enjoying getting to have unassailable SJ ammunition against him (which, ew), but for me, what he said and the fall out made me feel really, really terrible, like I'm not sure if I want to watch hockey anymore. So if this anon is feeling overwhelmed, you'd think they'd show more empathy for people who are overwhelmed by the existence of these issues, too.

Which, obviously how I feel and how other fans feel about particular issues isn't anyone else's problem or responsibility and you're allowed to be tired of the subject and to exercise self-care. But it's possible (and not very hard actually) to do that without being dismissive.
