McDavid team North America captain and Ekblad and Couturier the As.

Lol it took me too long to find the thread, and spell Couturier.

So all Canadians to go with their Canadian top line, top defensive pairing, and starting goalie (who is arguably the worst of the three). Real nice.

You rank Murray behind Gibson & Hellebuyck?

DA

I'd definitely place him behind Gibson, but I'd probably put him ahead of Hellebuyck.

This surprises me also. I mean one of those 3 goalies won a Stanley cup. And I realize he didn't do it alone. But wow. That is quite the hill you've chosen nonnie.

Re: World Cup of Hockey

It's not that crazy of an opinion, even if it's not that easy to argue, either. Murray has the smallest regular season NHL sample size of the three, playing behind a team that was not only very good, but particularly good about the kind of shots they let past to their G. It's almost impossible to make judgments on sample sizes like that. That goes for the others as well, but as least their samples are larger (and Hellebuyck much less sheltered).

As the anon who asked the question, I wasn't necessarily judging the opinion, I wanted to clarify cause nonny wasn't using names.

I was surprised to hear (cant remember where) but apparently months ago, before playoffs/Cup, Chiarelli highlighted Murray when asked about goalies for Team Nth America.

Yeah, I was responding to the airt who said that that's "quite the hill you've chosen." The person who made that remark said Murray was "arguably" the worst of the three and it is actually quite arguable.

+1

He's played like 30 NHL games. I'm super against giving the captaincy to the guy with the most talent.

I see the logic behind it if it's a team preparing a franchise player for a role he will hold on the team for a long time, while other players come and go. I can't see any rationale for it in a tournament like this, except as a marketing ploy. I honestly expected them to give McDavid an A and have a more experienced player with the C. I wonder if Saad would have gotten it if he were Canadian.

sa

To clarify, I see the logic if it's an NHL team, not a team with a roster that will only exist for one tournament and then be selected again four years later.

Someone on twitter made a point about Saad having almost twice as many playoff games as McDavid has NHL games.
