'Hockey RPF' as a fandom is not allowed, but individual teams are allowed. You can only nominate characters with fewer than 1000 fics (no filters).

Ahh okay, thank you! Seems like a stupid rule if it's so easy to circumvent, but fine with me!

I think the Yuletide mods are of two minds about it too, lol. There's always some weirdness about how to deal with different "types" of canons, and it seems like the consensus with hockey RPF is that it's a series of interconnecting canons instead of all one. Then to deal with the fact that there's trades and people always try to circumvent rules, there's the 1000 fic rule for real people.

It falls in line with how they treat RPF in general, which is basically the only area of Yuletide that is rare character-based instead of rare canon-based. So it's not really that nominating Price/Subban would be circumventing the rules (as they definitely have less than 1000 works on AO3 and FF.net) so much as the nominator made a mistake with their nomination that rendered it ineligible. Same as if I accidentally nominated Black Widow (MCU) instead of Black Widow (Black Widow Comics).

It's actually meant to promote easier offering/matching, as well, since you can only offer/request two to four specified characters in a given fandom or 'any'. So, for instance, if all the characters named above were lumped into one famdom, and I felt like I could offer Ovechkin, Backstrom, Price, Subban, Niemi and Lehtonen, then I'd either have to not offer two of them or gamble on offering the whole set if I wanted to write in the fandom. Whereas this way, I could just offer each of those pairs under their respective teams (if someone had nominated PK and Carey correctly) and have a chance of matching on all of the characters I want to write!

It's a really, really simple rule, and people still manage to fuck it up! See example #2 from this year's noms: somebody trying to get Sid and Claude in under Pens RPF. Which, uh, Sid is one of literally 5 characters who have too many fics written about them to not qualify in the realm of hockey...and, at least in this reality, CLAUDE GIROUX HAS NEVER PLAYED FOR THE PENS. This should not be hard, people....

Okay, I can guess the top four, but without looking it up I'm at a loss for #5... Seguin, maybe? Or one of Keith/Seabrook?

Seguin is tagged in 1056 fics on AO3, so it would probably be him.

Re: Exchanges, etc - Yuletide

It' Seguin. Neither Keith nor Seabrook is even close. Sharp would have been a better guess, but he's not particularly close, either.

Also, what makes this rule even more wishy-washy is that a lot of people, if they tag a ship A/B, won't bother with tagging A and B as individual characters, and the character filter doesn't take ships into account at all. So those numbers are undercounting.

Re: Exchanges, etc - Yuletide

Eh, even if you take ship + character tagging into account, the only other guy even close to being over 1000 is Jamie Benn, and nobody's nominated him this year, anyway. Below that, Patrick Sharp is at just over 700 - and Ovechkin and Giroux are hanging out between 500 and 600. So the numbers may be low, but nobody's slipping in who should be ruled out.
