Re: Fics You Want

From: (Anonymous)
I wish there was more Jamie/Tyler fic that wasn't about Tyler getting traded and them becoming absolute besties. It's been three years. I wish there was more stuff that focused on how their relationship could have changed from people who got thrown into the situation of revitalizing their team together while living in one another's pockets to living normal lives and working together while also being friends but not really talking that much in the off season and if Jamie not going out all the time because he got a girlfriend or how much of their friendship is real and how much of it is manufactured by the media.

TLDR: I want to focus more on the bits and pieces we've learned about what's going on right now and less holding onto romanticizing what happened in the past and writing the same story over and over. Not that those stories aren't great, because they are, but there's so much other stuff to write and people just.. Aren't writing it.

If there's one thing I find frustrating about hockey rpf fandom in general, it's the tendency to find The Story for a pairing and write 20-1000 versions of it, depending on the popularity of said pairing.

That's true of most fandoms though, no?

ayrt

Not in my experience.

Me either, especially with popular pairings. There always seem to be a lot of tropes that carry over (and I have shipped some ships that have been really tropey--LORD) but I haven't ever seen a ship that has people re-writing the origin story three years after it happened the way this one does.

NA

I think it's somewhat exaggerated. It's not the same authors writing the origin story over and over for three years for the same couple. The difference between Hockey RPF and other fandoms is that people tend to abandon pairings in this fandom as "new canon" tends to split pairings up. The few pairings that have stuck around *do* get new narratives written for them. Sid/Geno had Geno joining the Pens and forming a relationship with toaster!Sid that culminated in a cup, then there was the h/c concussion/jaw/knee injury era, then a rash of fics where they acknowledged the possibility they might not win another cup but that there was no one else they'd rather spend their life striving with. Sometimes people do go back to the original well, but a lot of my times it's someone new to the fandom.
