Yes. Because McJesus.

The fact that they didn't get Cooper as head coach is mind-boggling. Except, you know, McJesus.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

From: (Anonymous)
Even without McJesus, it's doubtful Cooper would get the nod. He's not a Hockey guy. He never ~played the game.~ Plus, he's American, and thus, as likely to be head coach as one of the US players is to get a letter.

SA

(I should say that I do know Cooper was born in Canada and played club hockey in law school. But I think those are nuances that don't enter into the politics of these international tournament situations.)

The assistants are Cooper, Tippett, DeBoer, and then an Oilers guy. There might be a reasonable argument that of the NHL coaches involved, Mclellan is the worst one. But IA with you about Cooper.

The friggin GM is Chiarelli, who's probably tried to trade Eichel to Team Europe already.

They set this up as McDavid's team, which is why I want him to go pointless the entire tournament all while being spoonfed ice time and PP time while RNH, Mack and Johnny Hockey tear it up.

Some idiot will still write about how it was McDavid's leadership that brought them their success.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

From: (Anonymous)
Lol only reason McDavid has gotten more than a single shot on goal in a game was because he got an insane amount of PP time last game. His ice time is ridiculous.

MacKinnon and Johnny Hockey have been fantastic, and Eichel has been quite good considering he's spent two games at wing, too.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

They're playing him like a defenseman! It's absurd. And Mackinnon has done more with his 30 seconds of PP time than McDavid has done with his 30 years.

Putting them together at evens was such a bad idea. Mackinnon looked miserable and lost his cool and RNH's game suffered away from him. I hate that they're willing to tank other lines to cater to McDavid but it's not surprising at all.

I'm glad they're finally putting Drouin, RNH, and MacKinnon back together, that line can do some damage.

I don't think Scheifele and Matthews are the answer for McDavid, especially because they're still both natural centers, but whatever. Drouin/RNH/Mac and Gaudreau/Eichel/Larkin will be fun as hell to watch tomorrow.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

That Drouin/RNH/Mackinnon line has absolutely been the best so I'm excited for its return too. It was already good, and then they added that Mackinnon/Drouin connection too. And RNH and Mackinnon developed chemistry really fast. Have they ever played together before? They seem really comfortable.

It's frustrating that these guys are supposed to be getting comfortable with each other but they're all playing musical chairs to suit McJesus. I'm sure it's not fun for McDavid either, tbh. He wants to score more than anyone else wants him to score and the line shuffling makes it 10 times worse with the added pressure of having messed everyone else up. "Okay, they gave me the leading scorer on the team, they gave me one of the best duos in the history of major junior, I have to score now."

Micromanaging someone in a "slump" is never a good idea, McLellan.

RNH and MacKinnon were on the same World Juniors team? I don't know if they've played together before, but they've been through practices together at least.

Musical linemate chairs was fine during exhibition games but it'll have to stop for the real ones. Ironically I thought McDavid looked the closest to comfortable so far with Gaudreau and Eichel, but I like their line with Larkin more.

Hopefully McLellan will realize if they get to elimination games he'll have to play the hot hand.

And they were roommates.

That’s because MacKinnon -- the odds-on favourite to go first overall in this summer’s draft -- is bunking in with the NHL’s top pick in 2011, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

“He doesn’t snore – he’s a good roommate,” reported the 17-year-old phenom from tiny Cole Harbour, N.S. who draws endless comparisons to Sidney Crosby.

“It’s definitely cool for me to be roommates with him. I don’t know if it’s a coincidence. Maybe it is.”

It’s not.

That they are roommates is not a coincidence, said Steve Spott, head coach of the national junior squad.

“Those are two young men who have unique experiences,” said Spott. “If there’s someone to lend advice to Nathan, then Ryan can be a good mentor to him.”

Turns out the mentorship has started and MacKinnon has been taking notes.

“I’m thankful to have him as my roommate,” MacKinnon said of Nugent-Hopkins. “He told me to play my game and keep it simple and hopefully things will work out.”

I didn't know this!! Thanks, anon.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

Good to know! Mackinnon has had so many mentors. I wonder if he keeps a list.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

Now Ryan Nugent-Hopkins/Nathan MacKinnon is a pairing I could get behind.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

From: (Anonymous)
It's sort of killing me how Matthews getting a shot next to McDavid has been characterized as him working his way up (which, he's been quite good) instead of just the coaching staff scrambling the lines constantly to try to get McDavid points. Just let the rest of them play, ffs.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

From: (Anonymous)
Matthews actually was one of the worst possession forwards the first two games. He's definitely gotten more comfortable though.

Re: Seguin out of World Cup with injury

NA
It's a little absurd that they haven't been able to force a line combination that helps McDavid produce yet, considering that McLellan is the coach and that's clearly his only goal based on how much ice time he's giving him. Lines and players that clearly have more chemistry and have actually been scoring are getting so much less TOI, and I wonder if that's going to come back and bite them in the ass later.

I noticed that they had Cooper running the PP at the end of the game against the Czechs. Which was interesting, because the Lightning PP is...not great. But at least they had him doing something! I like him as a coach.
