Re: Fandom Venting

Leafs fans, I want to like Auston Matthews, so if there's any way you could stop being awful, I'd appreciate it, thanks.

Re: Fandom Venting

I sometimes pity him, because it's going to get ugly when Leafs fans realize he's not a magic bullet they can aim to make their team suddenly stop sucking.

Oh, yeah. There's so much that can wrong with a rebuild, and I get the impression a lot of Leafs fans think the playoffs are happening this year. And Matthews is American and doesn't have the protective McDavid hype shield around him, or his won't last as long. (And the Metro probably gets both wildcards this year, too.)

Personally, I think it's likely one of the Leafs' top three prospects - Marner, Matthews, Nylander - won't live up to expectations, and that alone is going to be ugly. Plus they've staked a lot on Andersen, their defense is still shaky, and if their bet on overagers this draft year doesn't pan out, that's not great.

I do enjoy wondering which of Matthews, Eichel, and McDavid leaves their team first, though.

I've come to accept that Leafs fans are going to inevtiably make me hate him, especially as an Eichel fan.

I've already seen Leafs fans gloating about how everybody says Matthews would have gone ahead of Eichel if they were in the same draft. First of all, who even cares, but whatever gets ya goin Leafs fans. But I also feel a little bad for Eichel because just when the McDavid comparisons were dying down he starts getting shat on by another fanbase. Let him live!!!

I'm pretty sure I recall Bob Mackenzie saying something about how if Matthews had been born a couple days earlier, he would've been eligible for the 2015 draft and then would've likely gone third, so not ahead of Eichel. Leafs fans are gonna say what they're going to say; I've known basically my entire life to ignore them. It makes being an NHL fan much more pleasant.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, the consensus last year was that Matthews would have gone third, that's some Leafs fan revisionist history. Who knows who will be better, but it's not a slam dunk.

Yeah, it says so much more about them that they feel the need to put him down to make their future star look better. It's like they can't settle for getting a number one pick, they have to go above and beyond to make him seem better than he already is. It's so extra. Edmonton fans were never this annoying about McDavid.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
IDK, the McDavid fans turned Matthews fans I follow have been consistently annoying about both of them.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I think it's more the obnoxiousness surrounding McDavid wasn't limited to Edmonton. The NHL in general (especially the Canadian portion) has been worshipful of him. They don't put others down because they can't conceive anyone else as worthy enough to even compare (except maybe early Sid.) The McJesus nickname is sadly lacking in irony.

I doubt he's gonna win the scoring race next year like some are predicting, and he probably won't come in top three. It'll be interesting to see the response.

Re: Fandom Venting

At least Taylor Hall got out before he could be blamed as the reason for McDavid falling short of any expectations, and I have a feeling anything less than the Cup will be considered a failure. His injury last year actually gave him a little respite. McDavid is under tremendous pressure, but so are his teammates.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Yep. Lucic? He's going to have to replace Hall's scoring, which is pretty much impossible.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I don't know. Him not winning the Calder last year didn't slow them down and they like to point to his injury, even though he wasn't a lock leading up to the injury either.

Re: Fandom Venting

The way they're talking about Eichel and Matthews using the World Cup right now is soooooo gross. And actually untrue.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
"Using the world cup"? What do you mean?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Sorry that was unclear. Using the World Cup to compare the two, and specifically Matthews getting a shot in the McDavid line.
