This is the twenty-sixth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

Fic Discussion - When The Morning Comes.

This was just okay. It was sadder than I've come to expect for a fic about them. My favorite quality about them is how genuinely happy they make each other and there was really none of that joy in this fic, so it was hard to root for them. And the time jump just made the epilogue really unsatisfying. Kind of just wanted Nate to get together with Jo. And everyone that gave Nate advice was really tone deaf about his relationship with Sid, it was irritating.

I've all but given up wondering how hockeybot Sid still gets written. It just is. It will never ring true for me but there it is, always. Sigh. The frustrating part of this was that he can be a closeted hockey player without resorting to hockeybot angst, it was there! But no. No.

I liked it. I didn't feel like it was very hockeybot-ish - it was mentioned a few times that hockey came first for Sid, but that was basically it as far as I could tell.

The only problem I really had was with the epilogue. I liked the sadness and the friction, how thoroughly Nate wanted something that Sid couldn't give him and how broken up he was over it. But for Sid to show up on Nate's doorstep some number of years later and for Nate to just accept it was unsatisfying. I could've bought it with more work, but it's frustrating in its current form.

IMO, "I can't date you even secretly because hockey" is very hockeybot-ish. It's a classic Sid trope. And then at the end he says the closest he ever got to a relationship was Nate and that's just so pathetic and spacetoaster. The narrative repeated that it was more about hockey than just being closeted, too.

I can see what you mean, but it didn't come across that way to me. Between his absent-minded mention of "maybe one day with the right person" and the "I can't" it seemed more like he just wasn't in a place emotionally where he could date anyone. Of course his reasons for being closeted and a lot of that whole emotional state stemmed from hockey, but that seems different to me than the more direct "can't date because hockey." But I think what's there supports either reading.

I can admit I'm sensitive to it because it just comes up so much in other fics. And I'm inclined to think the author would be following that trend.

Usually when people say "hockeybot" I understand them to mean Sid is bad at feelings, at interpreting other people and their feelings, that kind of thing. Same as "spacetoaster," basically. Putting hockey first is a classic Sid trope, yes, but IMO it really isn't the same thing at all.

My understanding of the tropes is that "spacetoaster" refers to Sid's discomfort w/ normal human interaction and/or most social situations (a.k.a. a mechanical space case), whereas "hockeybot" referred to the conception that he has no life outside of hockey (a.k.a. a robot built for hockey and put away in a storage unit when not on the rink). But maybe it's just me?

They seem related to me. He doesn't have a relationship because he can't have a life outside of hockey, because hockey comes first.

Oh definitely, there's a lot of overlap. I'm just pointing out in this case it's not spacetoaster, in that Sid can't interpret other people/bad at feelings, but does seem to be hockeybot, in that he can't have a life outside of hockey.

I liked that it tried to say something different about Sid/Nate, although I agree that a lot of the appeal of the ship is how happy they are around each other. It didn't totally work for me, a little bit more of the aftermath would have been nice.

And this is petty, but Paisley is a he not a she.

Yeah, Paisley is a boy (and has an instagram! come on) and Tyson Barrie is never "Ty", that threw me off.

Is his girlfriend a professional photographer? Paisley's Instagram photos are distractingly good. It distracts me.
