Re: Game day thread 17 Sept 2016

You know, I never in my life heard anyone call Minnesota "Minny" before I started watching hockey, and I grew up in Wisconsin and both my parents grew up in Minnesota and I spent almost all my summers there. It's like calling it "Minny" is a bizarre hockey-only marker of "person not from Minnesota".

That's so weird weird because my super hockey playing and obsessed family from St Paul ALL call it Minny. To the point where I thought it was what the state was named when I was little.

Maybe it's because we never spent time in the Twin Cities? My mom is from a small town outside St. Cloud and my dad is from a small town that's about 50 minutes from Fargo/Moorhead. None of my grandparents/cousins/aunts/uncles have every once said "Minny". Though, tbf, none of them play hockey.

Maybe it's just a weird hockey thing.

We don't call it "Minny" in the Twin Cities either. I really think it's a hockey thing.

Of course it's a hockey thing. They gave the state a hockey nickname. First syllable + y.

Minnesota born and raised, and I have NEVER heard my state referred to as "Minny" outside of watching hockey either. It might be because we actually pronounce it as "Min-UH-so-duh."
