Re: Game day thread 25 Sept 2016

It's just impressive to me how every round has a different win/advancement condition. First round is by points, second round is single elimination, third round is best of three. Just, what.

I would really like to hear the reasoning behind it. It's just bizarre.

They said something about there being only 8 teams. They didn't want the final round to be decided by one game, but they couldn't figure out a way to get more games into the preceding rounds without unduly burdening a few teams.

It's not new or bizarre, it's how the WCoH has always been. It's because it was partly inspired by the Summit Series, which was, as the name implies, a series of games between two teams. When they decided to do the Canada Cup and then later the World Cup, they had to have a way to decide the finalists from an expanded field, but they still wanted to have the final be a series between the best.

The only bizarre part was the rly obvious attempt to engineer a USA/Canada final, which had a lot of people grumbling that they didn't just have a USA/Canada series instead if that's what they wanted.

1996's final was a best of three series, 2004's was just one game. For some reason, the 1981 Canada Cup final was also only a single game.

That's still six out of eight with a final series rather than a final game, so it's not bizarre or new.

Ok, and no one is arguing with you that it is, it's just information for people who are surprised by a format that hasn't been played in 20 years and/or are interested in the history of the tournament? It's how the WCoH originated, it's not how it's "always been."

Plus people are contrasting it with how the two previous rounds were won.
