#29 – Lay, Lie, or Laine?

This is the twenty-ninth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

THE RULES

It's super annoying how fans that have only liked the Leafs for less than a full season have picked up on the "cursed" thing longtime Leafs fans always complain about.
a) don't pretend to be long suffering when you bandwagoned on in roughly mid-December
b) your team is LOADED with amazing young players, it's time to stop whining and get over it

I honestly didn't think it was possible to hate a group of Leafs fans more than the group that managed to be arrogant about all of their young players while still bemoaning their horrible suffering as Leafs fans, but I was wrong. I hate this group way, way more.

At least Steve Dangle and co. actually suffered?? These are just whiny, entitled Check, Please! fans who think hockey is a queer fantasy. Liking Matthews gives them Most Inclusive and Progressive Stan points even though that gross homophobic white boy is their actual favorite.

Yeah, my main problem these days with Dangle and co. is that they seem to have no fucking clue how to deal with their sudden success without being douchebags about it, while still managing to maintain their Brand. Part of them still sees their team/fanbase as sort of lovable losers (lol! look at how many leads they blow! so leafs!), which they never were in the first place. The fact that these new fans listen to those guys and take them seriously, plus the whole Inclusive Queer Fantasy you mentioned is setting up a ridiculously annoying fanbase for YEARS TO COME and I'm already irritated about it.

Yup. There was a reason everyone took pleasure in their failures and that was because the fanbase was insufferable and smug even while their team was terrible. There was nothing lovable about them. Their treatment of Kessel, meme or not, was deplorable and that still persists in this management group that everyone loves.

I need 1D fandom to make a comeback or something to get these idiots away. They're so unbearable.

Yeah, I'm glad there are already whisperings about big name veteran free agents not wanting to join the team because of how they treated all of their vets this season. It probably won't actively harm them because their damn rookies are so good, but the mental gymnastics involved in acting like a team run by that management group is Good and Pure Underdogs is absurdly ridiculous. I can't wait for them to try to dance around the salary cap when they have to get the rookies new contracts and have somebody's agent demand they get paid their actual value and burn them hard.

I meant like what they did to Laich, Robidas, Cowen etc. They take on huge cap hits to get a pick or prospect along with it and then force the guys into the AHL or LTIRetirement. Filppula reportedly refused to waive his NMC to go to Toronto because he didn't want that happening to him. That or he hates Babcock. Or both.

They make them disappear - and it's absolutely as creepy/disappointing as it seems.

Robidas, Lupul, there's more but I'm drawing an absolute blank. Toronto media actually calls it "Robidas Island" - the place where Leafs veterans go to disappear.

They're still pissed about Stamkos, while pretending they're super over it!! nbd!! I wish they would stop being mean about his injury, though. Not that he cares, but he's such a nice guy and doesn't deserve to be mocked for a freak accident :/

Isn't there someone with that name whose written a few Sabres fics? That'd make sense, there's been a lot of Narrative saltiness with the whole evil Sabres tank 2k15 vs. righteous, hockey-saving Leafs tank 2k16. And one clearly worked better.

How is the turnaround from unwatchable hockey that was being managed into the ground into a pretty fun team that seems to have a future a particularly bad narrative?

Throwing jerseys is pretty universally recognized as a disrespectful dick move, especially in contrast to fans now are acting like they've ~always been there~ for the Leafs when they were really haven't been.
