#29 – Lay, Lie, or Laine?

This is the twenty-ninth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

What are your favorite rare pairs? I'm asking mostly because I'm looking for some new pairings & new reading material. My definition of rare = less than 20 fics tagged with the pairing on ao3.

My choices would be:

- Nicklas Backstrom/TJ Oshie - they've been playing so well together and they spent the bye week together too! unfortunately, there's only 2 fics with them and the pairing is not even the main focus of either one.

- Leon Draisaitl/Connor McDavid - should the Oilers continue their improvement, McJesus and Drai could become a Sid&Geno-like 1C & 2C franchise players. Also, they are fire when on the line together.

- Alexander Wennenberg/William Karlsson - they're so cute together! both young, Swedish, both centers and playing very different roles on the team. unfortunately, Karlsson may get exposed come expansion draft (if Korpisalo is not taken), so the bromance might be over soon.

- Andre Burakovsky/Tom Wilson - they used to live together & are still close neighbors who seem to interact with each other a ton. the fact that they are the two youngest guys on a rather mature Caps roster probably helps.

There's not really a lot of fic for my favourite rare pairs, so that wouldn't help you in finding something to read, lol.

If there's the all caps exchange again, you could always ask for two of those at least? :)

ayrt. Not a lot of fic is always better than 'I've read everything there is for this pairing so I'm looking for new ones. I'm just curious what else there is in this fandom.

As for the allcaps exchange - I don't feel comfortable writing in English, so I probably won't be making any requests or offering my dubious writing services.

I can't really rec a whole tag, but there's a few cute ones for Lindholm/Skinner.

And recently I read through the Gaudreau/Monahan tag and enjoyed that, too. (They have 22 fics though, so a liiitle more.) I think they're mostly shortish, so you could easily have a look around. :)

Oh wait, and thinking about Draisaitl, Chance Braid/Leon Draisaitl only has 3 fics, but iirc I liked them all.

If it helps: if I decide to sign up, I'll definitely consider Wilson/Burakovsky!

ayrt. Lindholm/Skinner looks like it could be right up my street, so I'll check it out asap. As for Draisaitl, I've already read everything in his tag, the fic with Chance Braid included. That secret marriage fic is just so good. I wish there was a continuation set in this season, although I'm not sure the relationship would survive all the McDrai moments or Drai playing some really stellar hockey.

Even a slim chance of more Wilson/Burakovsky is enough for me! I love them sfm.

Larkin/Werenski (they have 23 stories on ao3 - so I'm fudging a little bit)

Childhood best friends to lovers is my aesthetic.

ayrt. I didn't know about the childhood BFFs angle. I think I've read one or two fics with this pairing and I'm actually in the middle of reading a new one, with the octopus-shaped tentacle monster & a sex ritual, and so far, it's been interesting.

I have a pretty high tolerance for such things, but I didn't think it was horror-creepy. It's your standard xeno tentacle+aphrodisiac combo fic.

I don't really have time to go into a lot of detail about each pair right now, but these are a few I've really enjoyed:

Jimmy Hayes/Frank Vatrano - 5 works, one is a gender swap which I haven't read though since it's not my thing. Really liked bookhousegirl's especially

Nick Bjugstad/Kyle Rau - 19 works, imo the highest concentration of really quality fic in one rarepair. I really love this one a lot

Jack Eichel/Brandon Fortunato - Two longish fics

Matt Grzelcyk/Jimmy Vesey - Also only two fics, but both are shorter

Other college pairings with one fic each:
J. T. Compher/Kevin Lohan
Henrik Samuelsson/Brady Skjei

More 20 but I still consider fairly rare:
Jack Johnson/Sidney Crosby

Seconding Bjugstad/Rau. With the exception of one or two fics, almost everything in that tag is excellent.

To clarify though Henrik Samuelsson/Brady Skjei is college in the sense that Skjei plays for UMN. Samuelsson played in the WHL. They met in the USNTDP.

Oh man, I love Bjugstad/Rau! I've considered writing it, but then worried about my own fic quality, lol. I'd rec almost everything in that tag.

ayrt. Thanks! Some of those look very promising. I just love discovering new rare pairs in this fandom.

Some of my recent favs:
- Lucic/McDavid. You've got this great contrast between the young superstar and the aging power forward brought on to ~protect him and maybe score sometimes. The few fics out there play with those power imbalances in ways I really enjoy.

- Dumoulin/anybody, tbh. He's big and brawny and blushy and he has curly hair, and I enjoy people doing things to him. There's a great Letang/Dumoulin fic and also some Dumoulin/Sheary I've enjoyed.

- Letang/Maatta. Again there's very little of it, woe is me, but Letang's temper and experience next to Olli's youth and cool-headedness are very appealing to me.

- Fleury/Murray. Just a lot of very complicated feelings there as Murray steals the starting job from the guy who's ostensibly mentoring him.

+ 1 for all of this, particularly the Lucic/McDavid.

What do you want to see in Backy/Oshie, nonnie? I like talking ships!

ayrt. I really, really like bossy!Backstrom. Obviously, it comes from him playing center and calling set plays (and making TJ take some faceoffs for him) but there's something about Nicky casually ordering men around that does it for me. In contrast, TJ seems quite easy going, so it all works out. Basically, I'd love some power exchange dynamics with these two.

They also seem pretty giddy over playing together. I mean, just look at the Tampa game & the fun Nicky and TJ were having on the bench. SO I could also see something more reckless & carefree than d/s between Backstrom & Oshie.

I need more Sid/Sheary and Sid/Segs.

I watched some videos with Andre Ference and Leon Draisaitl and now I want stuff with them together too.

I need some more Lawson Crouse/TK

Chucky/PK also needs more stuff

ayrt. Agreed so hard on Ference/Draisaitl. I really dig the potential mentor/rookie dynamic they could have had, despite Ference being basically retired. Chucky/PK is also lovely, I wish there was more of it.

Seconding Ference/Draisaitl. Those vids were too cute.

Thirding Ference/Draisaitl. They are both just so darn likable.

Jeff Skinner/Elias Lindholm spend their mini breaks together, close friends off ice. Get tease about how close they are by the broadcaster.

Alexander Wennberg/William Karlsson, they live in each other pocket, never too far apart. Keeps saying they need time a part but that's a total lie.

Quick/Kopitar.
