#29 – Lay, Lie, or Laine?

This is the twenty-ninth post of Deke Dangle RPF Anon, a community for all your ice hockey anon meme needs.

She was starting to disassociate herself from the Pens last season, and I kind of wish she just did, full stop so she wouldn't have gotten to enjoy their winning the cup lol. Part of me really wants them to win again just to watch what she'll do, IMO if you practically hate the team you shouldn't get to celebrate the good stuff.

She's become even more unbearable, with the whole MAF/Murray thing. She needs to stop acting like any nice tweet about MAF by the official Pens twitter is an attempt by the org to destabilise Murray lmao. I get ragging on the beat writers for all the fluff articles (someone on reddit was saying that campaigning for awards like the Calder come from the beat writers, and right now the beat writers see Murray as a usurper, especially since they've always liked MAF as a person, which if true then yeah that sucks), but why does she expect the OFFICIAL Pens twitter to talk shit about the current starter?

I was the other anon who made the comment about Pens PR and I fully blame oflights for that, so I'm lol-ing. Since she pointed out how weird they are about him, I can't stop paying attention to it. They are really obsessed with him.

The real stickler for me wasn't even from her though. Ryan Wilson and a few others quote-tweeted the Pens when they tweeted about Fleury right after one of Murray's shutouts and shamed them into acknowledging Murray's shutout, it was pretty funny.

Oh well, yeah that's ridic then, because Murray was playing lol. But he isn't now so I don't get her damage.

She's been arguing all season that Fleury = bad, Murray = good so it's not surprising to me. And as I said earlier, since she pointed it out I can't unsee the bias either except I don't think it's some grand anti-Murray conspiracy. I think they're just really obsessed with Fleury, to go along with the media and the majority of fans.

This part: "The people who have contact with him will drown everything out with Fleury's affable personality, his smile, and his pranking ways. None of which are a negative. I repeat, none of those things are a negative. However, the more access somebody has to Marc-Andre Fleury the less capable they are of providing objectively accurate hockey analysis." I think this is really true. And if you're someone who thinks Fleury = bad, that must drive you nuts.

It's fascinating to me how much Pens fans have split into two camps. Either Fleury = bad, Murray = good or Fleury = good, Murray = ...well I haven't seen so much "bad" as "undeserving upstart," but it amounts to the same thing. Maybe I've just had bad luck in who I follow, but it really seems like there aren't that many people who acknowledge that they're both good but Murray's the future. /not a Pens fan, only kind of goes here

the beef with the pens twitter and pensinsidescoop i feel is a valid one. they're the official team representatives and they don't give murray nearly the credit when he performed so well in the season and they pile on the compliments for fleury.

they're the official twitters, they need to have some semblance of fairness and it's incredibly lacking wrt to murray imo

I get that when it comes to the regular season and he was playing, that's very shady of them. I just don't get her overreaction when it's the playoffs and Murray isn't playing so obviously they'll congratulate the guy who did and she'll harp on and on about it.

The only thing I've seen in the playoffs was that "last 30 out of 31 saves" tweet, which was really funny. That was comical stat manipulation.

i think it's more annoyance on her part that they never treat murray the same as fleury wrt to praise, which i get that fleury has been around way longer but it is grating at the same time to see such vast difference in their treatment

Huh. As a Pens fan who loves both goalies, I've never noticed that Pens twitter treats either of them better or worse. I follow every game, and the twitter team seems to recognize good games/performances whoever's in net. That said, MAF and Murray are very different goalies with very different personalities. MAF is a fan favorite, and they've def. been hyping that since Murray has been injured.

But that feels like good PR to me rather than some deliberate slight. Fleury is loved by the fans. He's playing well. It's his last season on the team, and he didn't play last post-season. It's a feel-good story, and he's an easy player to be excited about because he's so obviously into it and having a ball.

Murray is a different player. He isn't as fun. He doesn't feed off the crowd in the same way. Doesn't interact with the beat reporters or the Pens media the same way. He doesn't have the same relationship with them. I don't know if that = bias, or if it just results in different coverage, because Pens twitter isn't just reporting what's going on in a game, but interacting with fans.

I dunno, I feel like it's kind of similar to the Kris Letang thing and him being "underrated." He doesn't get as much coverage or interviews. He's not as
personable. He is in fact a little prickly, and I think it makes a difference in how he comes across via the media.

They literally had to be shamed into acknowledging Murray's shutout. Before that, the only thing they tweeted about was Murray saying what a nice guy Fleury is. If you can't see the bias in that, I don't know. I suspect you have a bias of your own you haven't fully realized.

Immediately after Andy's tweet, the Pens tweeted something out about Murray's shutout, but before that it was all Fleury even though he didn't play.

I'll freely admit to liking Fleury a lot, and likewise, I haven't kept careful track of tweets-per-goalie-appearance, so this is unscientific, but come on, during games, they're never short on "What a stop by Murray!"s or "He has been a wall back there!"s. I'll buy that there's a different vibe to the coverage, maybe, but there's a different vibe to the goalies, too.

+1 I love our goalies, but please, no, adding a Fleury or a Bishop would not be the answer. I don't want that to happen.

If Fleury was on the Avs, oflights would just like him again. She liked him as recently as last season.

It would probably mean Varlamov going back to the Pens, though, and I think that would be the funniest part.

Wow, really? I lurked on her twitter when this thread came up, and she is really adamant (/obnoxious) now about what a disaster the Caps-Pens series will be because of him. IDGI. It's not like he's become a different player in the last twelve months??
