Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)The real stickler for me wasn't even from her though. Ryan Wilson and a few others quote-tweeted the Pens when they tweeted about Fleury right after one of Murray's shutouts and shamed them into acknowledging Murray's shutout, it was pretty funny.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)That should say "sticking point", why would I want to say stickler, phone?
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)Oh well, yeah that's ridic then, because Murray was playing lol. But he isn't now so I don't get her damage.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)Speaking of Wilson, he had a really good article about this http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Ryan-Wilson/Goalie-insurance/177/84628
This part: "The people who have contact with him will drown everything out with Fleury's affable personality, his smile, and his pranking ways. None of which are a negative. I repeat, none of those things are a negative. However, the more access somebody has to Marc-Andre Fleury the less capable they are of providing objectively accurate hockey analysis." I think this is really true. And if you're someone who thinks Fleury = bad, that must drive you nuts.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)It's fascinating to me how much Pens fans have split into two camps. Either Fleury = bad, Murray = good or Fleury = good, Murray = ...well I haven't seen so much "bad" as "undeserving upstart," but it amounts to the same thing. Maybe I've just had bad luck in who I follow, but it really seems like there aren't that many people who acknowledge that they're both good but Murray's the future. /not a Pens fan, only kind of goes here
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)I guess because it's his last year so people have come out of the woodwork, or everyone has rose-tinted glasses on right now so it's a MAF love-in. I love them both, I know Murray's the future but I'm glad we also have MAF now.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)Generally I think you saw a lot of national media and bloggers/beat writers/hockey twitter fans of other teams who dismissed or derided Fleury because he earned that terrible playoff reputation. The local writers and the team have almost always been on his side, even if the narrative has shifted from "he's flawed but who can replace him?" to "he's an elite goalie and deserves Vezina votes" like it is now.

From: (Anonymous)Your impression seems to be most people's impression of the fandom perspective, and it's bizarre to me, because everyone in my circle of Pens friends adores Flower as a person AND recognizes that Murray is our long-term goalie. Like, obviously these rabid worshipers of the binary are out there because people keep describing them, but I almost never run into them.
Although tbf, when I have found them I've muted/unfollowed with great prejudice, because ain't nobody got time for that. If you can't see that Murray's the goalie of the future, then I question your basic understanding of the hockey business. And if you can't understand why people love Fleury a whole lot, will miss him, and want him to be happy, then I question your ability to empathize with other people and your grasp of, like, how feelings work. I can't really handle either of those qualities in someone I follow for hockey.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)It may be a mix of platform and team makeup. I'm mostly on tumblr, and the Pens aren't my #1 team, so I don't follow that many Pens fans. It just seems like most of the ones I did follow suddenly developed crazy hot takes that made me back away slowly. So this may in part be a sample size issue, and/or a case of the loud but small fringe.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)Yeah, that's just unfortunate. :( I keep to Twitter mostly, and just the Twitter people I like, so that probably saves me.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)I've curated my twitter experience to people who both love MAF because he is a good person and also a good goalie (since Bales came), and recognize that Murray is the future of the franchise and also enjoy him. It's amazing how both are possible and indeed preferable for me.
Re: Ask Meme
From: (Anonymous)That's all.
