This comment is extra amusing on flatmeme.

Re: Ask Meme

I was the other anon who made the comment about Pens PR and I fully blame oflights for that, so I'm lol-ing. Since she pointed out how weird they are about him, I can't stop paying attention to it. They are really obsessed with him.

The real stickler for me wasn't even from her though. Ryan Wilson and a few others quote-tweeted the Pens when they tweeted about Fleury right after one of Murray's shutouts and shamed them into acknowledging Murray's shutout, it was pretty funny.

SA

That should say "sticking point", why would I want to say stickler, phone?

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
Anon from the comment the anon you replied to was replying to (lol help me).

Oh well, yeah that's ridic then, because Murray was playing lol. But he isn't now so I don't get her damage.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
She's been arguing all season that Fleury = bad, Murray = good so it's not surprising to me. And as I said earlier, since she pointed it out I can't unsee the bias either except I don't think it's some grand anti-Murray conspiracy. I think they're just really obsessed with Fleury, to go along with the media and the majority of fans.

Speaking of Wilson, he had a really good article about this http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Ryan-Wilson/Goalie-insurance/177/84628

This part: "The people who have contact with him will drown everything out with Fleury's affable personality, his smile, and his pranking ways. None of which are a negative. I repeat, none of those things are a negative. However, the more access somebody has to Marc-Andre Fleury the less capable they are of providing objectively accurate hockey analysis." I think this is really true. And if you're someone who thinks Fleury = bad, that must drive you nuts.

It's fascinating to me how much Pens fans have split into two camps. Either Fleury = bad, Murray = good or Fleury = good, Murray = ...well I haven't seen so much "bad" as "undeserving upstart," but it amounts to the same thing. Maybe I've just had bad luck in who I follow, but it really seems like there aren't that many people who acknowledge that they're both good but Murray's the future. /not a Pens fan, only kind of goes here

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I think the sides kind of fuel each other. Any praise for Murray (what little there is, anyway) is seen as a slight to Fleury, and vice versa. The Fleury side is huge and rabid and the Murray side is oflights and letangier etc. and they're obnoxious so it turns the other side even crazier in support of Fleury.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
TBH it's surprising to me that people still rabidly love MAF because the majority to me seems like they've been screaming for his head, ever since 2012 (sometimes unfairly because yeah he shat the bed in 2012 but the years after were less his fault, more everyone else's). When he signed his last deal I remember people saying this was an affront to Sid and Geno because their best years were going to coincide with his contract.

I guess because it's his last year so people have come out of the woodwork, or everyone has rose-tinted glasses on right now so it's a MAF love-in. I love them both, I know Murray's the future but I'm glad we also have MAF now.

Re: Ask Meme

On the RPF side, it's a newer influx of omgcp fans that have latched onto him and spread it around Twitter. Think of freckledbutt and her group, they're the biggest Fleury stans I know.

Generally I think you saw a lot of national media and bloggers/beat writers/hockey twitter fans of other teams who dismissed or derided Fleury because he earned that terrible playoff reputation. The local writers and the team have almost always been on his side, even if the narrative has shifted from "he's flawed but who can replace him?" to "he's an elite goalie and deserves Vezina votes" like it is now.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I'm sure he's a nice man, but I'll never understand the over the top, hero worship adulation thing that group has for him.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I think it's just how everyone is with their fave. It's amusing to me because I spent so much time in non-RPF fandom, seeing this stuff directed at fictional characters, but the same amount of adulation at a real person somehow feels creepier.

Re: Ask Meme

freckledbutt is the wooooooorst

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
Can't wait to watch the mental gymnastics when Fleury ends up on a team she hates.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
she really hates dallas so i'm pulling for them to get him this summer. she said she wants him on the canes too but they already have a mediocre goalie, why would they want a second

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
The Canes seem bizarrely committed to sticking with Ward. I would honestly be surprised if they tried to upgrade. But I think any team with big $$$ to spend on a goalie is gonna go for Bishop anyways.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I've seen so many people who want Fleury on the canes and act like it'd be such a gift, although he's old and streaky (which the canes goalies are all on their own already lol) and it'd mostly be a favour to the pens to take him on...

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, Fleury's streaky, but significantly less so than either of the Canes goalies. You can maybe chalk some of that up to the team around them, but not all.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
At least some of it is marcoux, the goalie coach, who was fired.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
I agree that he's better, but not by such an amount that he'd actually improve the Canes significantly. Like, they probably still wouldn't make the playoffs if he was the only factor that changed.

NA

Your impression seems to be most people's impression of the fandom perspective, and it's bizarre to me, because everyone in my circle of Pens friends adores Flower as a person AND recognizes that Murray is our long-term goalie. Like, obviously these rabid worshipers of the binary are out there because people keep describing them, but I almost never run into them.

Although tbf, when I have found them I've muted/unfollowed with great prejudice, because ain't nobody got time for that. If you can't see that Murray's the goalie of the future, then I question your basic understanding of the hockey business. And if you can't understand why people love Fleury a whole lot, will miss him, and want him to be happy, then I question your ability to empathize with other people and your grasp of, like, how feelings work. I can't really handle either of those qualities in someone I follow for hockey.

It may be a mix of platform and team makeup. I'm mostly on tumblr, and the Pens aren't my #1 team, so I don't follow that many Pens fans. It just seems like most of the ones I did follow suddenly developed crazy hot takes that made me back away slowly. So this may in part be a sample size issue, and/or a case of the loud but small fringe.

Yeah, that's just unfortunate. :( I keep to Twitter mostly, and just the Twitter people I like, so that probably saves me.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
This has totally happened on tumblr. I see it every flippin' game in the MAF tag. I have successfully muted most of those people.

Re: Ask Meme

From: (Anonymous)
+1000 Couldn't agree more.

I've curated my twitter experience to people who both love MAF because he is a good person and also a good goalie (since Bales came), and recognize that Murray is the future of the franchise and also enjoy him. It's amazing how both are possible and indeed preferable for me.

I love Ryan Wilson and co.

That's all.
