Cool, no one said he should be considered "day to day," Sullivan called his recovery a "day to day process," which is what the recommended concussion protocol literally is.

NA the NHL app literally pushed a headline saying Crosby was considered day to day.

And that headline is a misrepresentation of the information the article itself contains.

Hm, yes, because being on the ice after three days is definitely taking their time, and there are certainly no differences between early in the season and the post season, or the fact it's his second concussion in a year, but if you trust them 🖤💛🖤

Being on the ice after three days is exactly what would be medically advised under the protocol as long as he's been asymptomatic the entire time. So I guess you think he's lying to his doctors?

Hockey players would never!

If you think that's what he's doing, own up to that opinion and say that. Him lying about his symptoms is different from the team rushing him back. Assuming he's telling the truth, nothing is happening that's not in accordance with current medical recommendations.

I think he's underplaying his symptoms, the team is undermotivated in ensuring his neurological health, and that their decision making is very likely putting his "long" term health in serious question, as an extension of the NHL culture of taking medical guidelines as a sort of vague suggestion to possibly consider. Is that explicit enough for you?

Sure, next time just say that this is what you're worried about instead of pretending you know anything about how concussions are treated. All of this is really reasonable to suspect based on what we know of the NHL's disgusting injury culture. None of this is a reasonable conclusion to make from the simple fact of someone diagnosed with concussion resuming skating in three days, when current recommendations are to begin exercise after 24-48 hours of asymptomatic rest.

Yes, asymptomatic. As I've already said, there lies my disbelief, and therefore distrust, of this timeframe. Doubting Crosby has the most ideal recovery time possible isn't the same as complete ignorance on the subject. despite your desire for intellectual superiority.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The 24-48 hour recommendation is actually about the time from injury provided that symptoms don't persist. It's not an ideal recovery time, it's just a fairly normal one.

That's... just not true, but whatever, you're right, sparing an ounce of concern was a waste on time on my part.

Amazing that you are able to tell if someone is symptomatic or not over the internet!! You should share this incredible medical breakthrough with someone! Have all the doubts you fucking want, but those doubts are assumptions you've already made beforehand based on your (reasonable) suspicion of NHL culture, not conclusions you can actually draw from what anyone publicly knows about Crosby's condition.

Like someone else said, every concussion is totally different. And no one's assuming he's recovering in "the most ideal time possible"? Him skating now literally just means (or ought to mean) that he's had at some point at least one asymptomatic rest day and one asymptomatic off-ice workout since the injury. I'm not sure why this is so inconceivable to you given that it's pretty common for symptoms to be delayed in manifesting or recurring. Him skating is in no way a sign of being on the brink of being cleared to play and doesn't even mean he's asymptomatic *now* or is expected to remain so, only that he cleared the first two steps. He could get stuck at this step, he could be returned to a previous step, but current guidelines for return-to-play suggest that exercise-based treatment can be helpful before full recovery has happened (Amanda Kessel talked about this in relation to how much exercise helped her progress with her own recovery), rather than total rest, which is no longer the recommendation.

You don't have to blindly trust that Crosby and the team are doing what's best for his health. But there's no reason to be freaking out at him having a skate, and your logic here is totally circular. You starting off by pointing to the three-day timeframe as ~evidence of Crosby/the team being careless with his health (bad NHL culture), and then you implied that bad NHL culture (by extension Crosby's and the team's carelessness with his health) was the reason to be suspicious of the timeframe/recovery in the first place, and now you're making diagnostic assumptions based on Crosby's health history about something that isn't predictable at all even to a patient's actual doctor. If that's not complete ignorance, it's pretty close.

God, I hope you're wrong. But it's certainly plausible.

On the other hand Crosby, if anyone, knows the costs. Hopefully he'll think of future years and not the next few weeks.

da

He knows the costs, and his concussion at the beginning of the season was diagnosed solely based on self-reporting. Obviously the pressures of the postseason are totally different, but it's one thing to be concerned for him and another to draw baseless conclusions about a stranger's health and assume you know what's good for them better than they do, when there isn't an indication that that's the case yet.

This, plus I'm tired of the weird lack of boundaries of all the internet doctors on twitter, Reddit, etc. I hope he's not pushing himself too quickly or that the team isn't, but ffs you guys aren't the guy's doctor. Every concussion is different, automatically assuming he's being an idiot about his health based on what you see happening from the outside is... meh.

na

you're saying that like it would be at all surprising?

Re: What's Up With Your Team? - Playoffs, Here We Come

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, no, I didn't say it like it would be surprising. I said it like that's the implication that you (general "you" not airt) are making if you're going to condemn his medical treatment based on the timeframe it's happening in. And while it's definitely possible, it's quite a leap to jump to that assumption based on your internet MD opinion of news you're reading in an NHL.com article.

That is not true. They are supposed to pass the bike test first.

Re: What's Up With Your Team? - Playoffs, Here We Come

(Anonymous) 2017-05-04 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and? Assuming he's asymptomatic and the doctors are otherwise satisfied with his cognitive function and balance throughout, it's a day of rest, a day with light aerobic exercise (stationary bike), and a day (i.e., day three) of sport-specific activity with no head contact (skating).

Where are you getting that? I've always heard that Day 3 is vigorous excercise, not skating yet.

Why don't you actually Google recommended concussion recovery for athletes before behaving like a condescending ass in public?

You realllllly want Crosby to be on the brink of retirement, living his life in a dark room with the drapes closed, don't you?

Jesus christ, I'll remember to showing any concern is only appropriate when you're calling for the other guy's head next time you guys are sobbing over the maliciousness of anything more than or equal to a clean hit above his belly button.

No, I don't think he's going to retire until he literally can't keep his feel under him. He may even have another decent decade left in him You can dismiss it as concern trolling if you want, but I do think it's likely he's going to suffer in the long run after his career from his ever-building history with concussions.
