Re: Fandom Venting

I hate tumblr/twitter fights where people start listing things about themselves ("I'm fat, I'm Jewish, I'm disabled") like it automatically validates their argument and/or makes them immune from criticism.

the word shiksa is in and of itself pretty loaded and misogynistic too, and they're using it.

Also, if they're Middle Eastern, what's with all the Yiddish?

I should mention I'm Jewish and my father grew up speaking Yiddish. Like, Jews = not a monolith.

ayrt

Yeah I'm just here like... Do they know that term is offensive to Jewish women too?

If we're talking about chagsameah, they're not. Their about says they're "ethnically an ashkenazi jew (german-american)," though it also says they weren't raised Jewish and are in the process of converting, which makes me think worse of all of their "X called me slurs, X killed my whole family!" dramatics even more. That shit has actually happened to me and my family and I sure as shit wouldn't use it to score points in online arguments about hockey players, because it's serious and painful. Given that they weren't even raised Jewish, it seems like for them it's more removed/hypothetical.

nylandeer was the one that called herself middle eastern.

Anon who posted about it. Ah, OK. That makes more sense. Most diasporic German Jews I've met don't ID as Ashkenazi either, since that has the connotation of 'the Pale' and because they tended to immigrate to the U.S. About 50 years earlier than Jews from Russia-Poland-etc. but that's obviously their prerogative.

Um. Far be it from me to determine who is Jewish, but I'm even more [eyes emoji] at them now, especially that they keep using goyim and goyische in arguments.

And yeah, family history with the Holocaust is not something to take lightly. That's transgenerational trauma.
