I remember when Getzlaf was the only one to use pride tape in game, and it wasn't even the ducks pride night.

idk what to think of all this..

I think the juxtaposition of those two facts just illustrate that homophobic slurs are endemic to the NHL, and that even players who might care about homophobia as a general concept haven't thought through how it manifests in speech.

+1 Yeah, this. And I wouldn't be surprised if "cocksucker" didn't necessarily ping for him as a slur the way the f-slur probably would. It's pretty similar to the Colbert/Trump thing. Not ok, and I hope he learns a lesson, but I doubt he's consciously homophobic.

I mean, homophobia is complex, like most biases. He may consider it a genuine shame that there's no out players while still thinking that a dude putting another dude's dick in his mouth is in some way demeaning. Homophobic slurs and even jokes that rely on implicit homophobia are everywhere in sports; it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't consider the two attitudes contradictory at all, or that calling someone a cocksucker was actually homophobic.

yeah, or he may not even think about the actual meaning of the word, like no one calling someone a motherfucker actively thinks "this person fucks his mom". it's not nearly on the same level for me as what shaw said.

anyway, not excusing it, it's obviously a word that should disappear from people's vocabulary, but i think the people calling him a definite homophobe are being a bit much.

The insulting part of motherfucker isn't the literal belief that the target of the insult fucks his mom, but that fucking your own mother is in itself demeaning. Just like calling someone a cocksucker doesn't literally mean you think they suck cock, just that sucking cock is in itself demeaning.

I get what you mean, and I do think it's not on the same level, but whether he's consciously thinking of the actual meaning or not, that meaning is what the insult rests on.
