Re: Discussion Thread

From: (Anonymous)
I listen to a general hockey podcast done by a few Coyotes beat reporters. In a recent episode on May 30th, they talked about that John Scott quote that was going around about PK Subban and basically said that it is completely indicative of his character and he's kind of a shitty person. I'm iffy at the best of times at picking up on subtext type stuff (that lovely autism feel) so anyone else willing to listen to it and give me a read on whether they just really dislike the guy for personal reasons or are being at least sorta objective about it?

Re: Discussion Thread

By 'his character' do you mean Scott's or Subban's?

I'll listen. What's it called?

Might be this:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/p-k-subban-responds-john-scotts-piece-garbage-comments/

There's an embedded link to "The Andrew Walker Show" in the article which is maybe what the OP of this sub-thread is talking about. An ad and then PK talking is going to autoplay depending on your default settings.

Based on written part, Scott said a) 2 year old quote taken out of context for ESPN's E:60 segment on Subban and b) his remarks were about PK *on ice* and he actually considers him a friend.

PK's tweet about it was basically "good luck to you and your family, I didn't take your remarks personally". So who knows?

Re: Discussion Thread

op is specifically talking about a discussion between coyotes beat writers so this is clearly not it.

Re: Discussion Thread

It's this episode of the Natural Hat Trick podcast: https://www.fanragsports.com/podcast/natural-hat-trick-john-scott-farce-nhl-marketability/

Re: Discussion Thread

Yep, that was the one. I thought I included it in the original comment but I guess I didn't, whoops, so thanks for finding it.

I don't know if there is any more to this, but I wouldn't be surprised if the beat reporters bought into the organization's feelings that John Scott was an embarrassment who never should have been signed who acted selfishly in not immediately stepping aside when named All-Star so that a "real" Coyote could go.

There was a lot of hope two years ago that they were close to making the playoffs and being taken seriously, and for a lot of people John Scott was the face of league mockery.

ok. I'm back. Here's my live blogging of it.

Craig Morgan is the one who really goes off. He starts by saying there's no context to John's quote about PK. And that's just "John Scott being John Scott". And then he goes bananas and says the entire Coyotes locker room thinks John Scott is a selfish ass and nobody wanted him on their team and NHL fans were sold a false bill of goods when he was the likeable hero at the all star game and now that he's made this comment about PK - Craig feels like he can finally tell the truth about John Scott.

His reasoning for this is mostly - no one congratulated John Scott on twitter. Which is maybe not the best barometer? And then they rag on the fan vote. Then they rag on Dylan Larkin for being the super popular all star rookie that should have been Max Domi because the Red Wings don't need a loveable rookie to be popular but the Coyotes do. And then there's a Shane Doan for all star campaign.

To me they come off as people who have an ax to grind. And they come back to it being about the Coyotes not having a representative in the all star game and how it was selfish of John Scott to go.

They kind of play it off as "we're finally telling you what we've known forever" and "You should believe everything I say, but I'm not telling you who said it but ~lots of people said it."

And then they make it into a race thing and the way they do it it kind of felt (to me) like they're underhandedly saying John Scott is racist.

(And then they rail very passionately on the Mem Cup format)

So to answer your question - they didn't come off especially objective to me, they didn't provide any evidence that he's a shitty person (besides that he went to an all star game as an elected representative and he should have been a good team player and given his spot up for a "real" player) and seem to base this entire argument on things people said that they can't repeat.

And then they go into a whole disengenuous thing about how the really great thing about PK is that he's unique and not all of the things that they just implored John Scott to be.

thanks for taking one for meme, nonnie. because yeah, your liveblog and summary make it sound like this crew was pretty seriously biased. cite your sources, dudes, especially if you're directly contradicting what scott himself said about "2 years old and out of context".

(and thanks for finding the *right* link as opposed to my incorrect one. meme-ing before caffeine was obviously not a good life decision :)).

personally, i *loved* john scott, all-star MVP, but i don't particularly follow the coyotes so for me he was kind of a "fuck the hockey establishment, why *not* send your enforcer to the asg by fan vote?" situation.

da

He was on my team years ago, and seemed well-liked by our media, the team, the fans... I don't think that means he couldn't possibly be racist (although the added context doesn't make me the quote is evident of that), but this makes it sound like they're using the label to support a previously-held grudge.

LOL. Your whole liveblog sounds a bit suspicious, but this tips it over into lolworthy territory. These guys sound uber biased.
