Re: Fic Discussion! - Seafoam
From: (Anonymous)why does it being screened or not matter? if the author tracks this meme then they saw it. other people who are afraid to write and also track this meme saw it. once something is said the words can never be taken back. all screening does is make sure that other people cant see it ex post facto.
yes there are way worse trolling. there are also way worse things than having people saying mean thing about your fic. that doesn't mean that there aren't people out there for whom getting one bad comment isn't enough for them to delete all their fic. everyone has different things that they're willing to take. some people don't even have to have hate directed at them personally for them to delete their fic or give up on a fic they're already writing.
Saying that it is worse elsewhere and that's a bigger contributory factor to people leaving than this meme is a factual statement that's critical to understanding the nature of the problem.
no one has said that only meme is the reason people leave, afaik? the anon mentioned a million other things (trolls, people finding fic, people reporting on fic, problematic favs, etc) for why this fandom is losing people. they just said that acting like wanky things on meme doesn't help and adds another place where wank is happening. and since we're on meme, that's all we can work on. as authors we can only increase having different fic and pairings by writing different fic and pairings, and as readers we can only increase different fic/pairings by commenting and reccing those fics so the authors know there's an audience. dealing with memes problems is exactly like that.
i'm not sure where you're getting the impression that people think meme is the main reason this fandom can be a pit sometimes. nobody has said that!
Re: Fic Discussion! - Seafoam
From: (Anonymous)Because if it's screened people can't see it? And even nonnies' concerns that someone might link the author to it no longer apply?
I am happy to say that kink-shamey, looks-bashy, wanky comments that get screened are bad, but also they get screened, which means they're not available to most people, don't make up meme's public archive, and have already been demonstrated by the mods to be not acceptable behavior. Unless they're tracking - which is their choice, and which means they presumably have a thick enough skin to make that choice - authors can't see those comments, which makes them basically the opposite of askbox hate or fic flames.
Re: Fic Discussion! - Seafoam
From: (Anonymous)NNFs have no reason to expect that they'll be personally attacked or trolled and that has nothing to do with thick skin. This is a general purpose meme! If some random psycho sees that I ship Beau/Paul and goes to my twitter and then comes here to leave a comment about how BeauPaul 69 is a fat uggo n-word, and that shit showed up in my inbox, I would flip the fuck out. The kink meme trolling happened because someone didn't like Sid/Geno and they made fun of NNFs who were writing it, for gods sake.
If this were a hate meme like Supernatural has then I would agree that coming here would be risky business but holy shit this comm is mostly slash googles and hockey questions. The screened comments had nOTHIGN to do with the fics. People who replied got "oh so u luv irl rape huh" bullshit pushed back at them.
You shouldn't have to avoid a huge part of a small fandoms fannish space just because you were kind enough to share your fic/fanart/gifs/meta/headcanons. If you think that doing so puts a target on your back and makes you free game, so you should toughen up, that's just not how fandom works.
If you're a BNF then you come to expect it but hardly anyone in this fandom is a BNF, even people who wrote 100 fics, and middle name and NNFs with a few fics to their names shouldn't expect to have shit thrown their way. THAT'S why this fandom is so unwelcoming. Being a BNF sounds liek a horrible, no fun time for 90% of people and that you get BNF level wank and hate in this fandom even as a NNF/MNF is fucking terrifying and all the reason to GTFO.
Re: Fic Discussion! - Seafoam
From: (Anonymous)I have no idea what your point is. Nobody's saying that it's your fault for not having a thicker skin if a "random psycho" posts something that breaks meme rules. They're saying that the random psychos of the world are already being appropriately handled by the mods, and that if you want to reduce your chances of seeing it even further, don't track. Or if you do track, than yes, you need to have a thick enough skin to ignore random psychos, because no one in fandom is capable of cleaning out your inbox, but you.

From: (Anonymous)why does it being screened or not matter?
Because that's all meme can plausibly do. Really, it is. We can condemn it and screen it, we can't take the keyboard out of the sociopaths hands.
everyone has different things that they're willing to take. some people don't even have to have hate directed at them personally for them to delete their fic or give up on a fic they're already writing.
This is true. I agree. But what does that mean for other people's behavior? I have severe phone anxiety, for instance, but I'm not advocating for social norms that mean I don't have to call to make appointments. We have to be able to set norms which are plausible and fair to both sides. There is literally zero discussion of fic, or of anything in the fandom, that has no potential for putting authors off -- your point concedes that. So unless we want to close meme, we need to differentiate between "acceptable, even with possible negative externalities" and "unacceptable."
i'm not sure where you're getting the impression that people think meme is the main reason this fandom can be a pit sometimes. nobody has said that!
People losing their shit when people point out the fact that it is worse elsewhere certainly seems like it. Things can be bad or negative, without being worse. I think there are good indications that CWM's retreat, for instance, had nothing to do with meme. When people start having vapors about people pointing that out, or pointing out that anon tumblr hate is way the fuck worse than anything that happens on this meme, even screened, it certainly seems like they are giving meme way more importance than it has.
I guess my point is, what's your line? Meme, to me, for all that it has flaws, seems like it's doing a good job keeping on the "acceptable" level of chilling effect on writing. A lunatic insulting one's children, exploiting one's mental illnesses, ridiculing one's gender identity, etc etc because someone had the gall to write a story on the internet is way the fuck past that line. That's why I keep saying it's worse elsewhere and it's important to remember that.
