Has anyone gotten angry at a writer for including something that they felt the writer should have warned for, that wasn't covered by the above list?

Well, yeah, in this fandom there was a notorious double wank after first marycontraire and then imp (or possibly the other way around) posted fic which was interpreted by many as depicting domestic abuse treated as a romance that lots of people thought wasn't properly warned for. That went on for a long time and I think was pretty much the impetus for imp leaving this fandom (I don't know her, I'm just guessing).

Even "choose not to warn" isn't enough for some people. Just try to do what you can and what you're comfortable with.

But beyond those I think incest and maybe non-hockey ailments are things that might annoy me if they weren't tagged for. Incest is more of a click back, but I could be sold on the illness thing in some circumstances if I know going in that it will be relevant to characterization.

This happened fairly recently, actually. hatfulofcrazy included graphic animal death without warning for it and people asked her to add a warning.

I've been annoyed with authors who write bait and switch fic, both regarding pairings and mood. I don't want the summary or tags to spoil the ending, but I do want some clue it's not a paint by numbers ship fic.

I also don't like fic that fetishizes addiction, but it rarely makes me angry. It's more likely to trigger anxiety.

I've been pretty angry about various *isms in fic, but how would an author who writes stuff like that know how to warn?

Recreational drug use. Hate it. It's one of the only things that make me instantly close the fic and never read the author again.

I just don't like it. And I don't like the idea that everyone seems to have that drug use is normal and okay. In my country the stat is that ~34% of people over 14 have tried cannabis at least once in their life, and 10% within the last 12 months. That's high but it's not "most people" like someone else in this thread said, and that's the illicit drug with the highest usage. Maybe it's different where you are, I don't know. But I don't think it's cool and I don't think it's okay. And sure, maybe athletes are doing it but I don't want to know about it. They're probably all cheating on their wives and raging misogynists and homophobes too. I choose to ignore those aspects of them and I don't want to see them in fic either.

Because they're pro athletes, or are you not a fan in general?

I gotta say that I assume that many pro athletes will use drugs once in a while, just like most people. I know these guys have to be in tip-top shape, but there's no way at least some of them don't smoke a joint now and then, do a couple of lines at a party, etc. Actually, I think it would be unrealistic for rich young jock dudes not to have partaken.

no, not because they're pro athletes. It's been the same for all my fandoms. My objection to drugs is because of personal issues.

It doesn't make me want to instantly close the fic but I still don't like to read about it. It may be realistic for young professional athletes but I still really don't like it. It's one of my biggest do not wants.

This thread is interesting to me - I'm in my late 20s, and I have to say, I would be really surprised to meet someone my age who had never tried any kind of recreational substance. Like ... you've never taken a hit of someone's joint? I guess I would find it hard to believe, unless they lived a very sheltered life (my religious cousins, for example). I always thought that people who have never tried something at least once would be a very small minority, and i know a wide range of people, both partiers and those who live a quiet life.

For the record, although I've tried a few things, I don't really use drugs myself, as they don't agree with me. except for maybe sharing a joint with my flatmates now and then.

Just wanted to add that I'm not knocking anyone who's never tried drugs - as I said, I'm not keen on them myself. Just genuinely surprised at this thread, and thought I'd add my own experience.

I'm in my 20s and know a pretty good balance of people who do recreational drugs and people who never touch the stuff (I'm in the latter group), although most people I know, in both categories, have no issues with drinking alcohol. I find it really surprising/weird that practically everyone you know has at least tried drugs. Plenty of people just have no interest and it's nothing to do with being sheltered in my experience.

(In terms of fic, it doesn't bother me but I don't like when it's particularly depicted as a 'cool' thing to do either. Shotgunning in particular makes me roll my eyes and back out of fic though, I just don't find anything about that hot personally.)

I've always known where I could get pot if I wanted some. Hell, my sister smokes pretty regularly. It's just never held the slightest appeal for me.

Fwiw I'm around your age and I've never tried any drugs (out side of prescription pain killers for surgery). I was raised in a drug-friendly/pro-legalization household and I'm not religious or sheltered. I've just never felt like trying it.

Your surprise surprises me. Only the minority of my social group and no one I hang out with on a regular basis has tried drugs. Someone else gave a stat that only a third of people in their country have tried tried elsewhere in this thread. Two thirds of people are not sheltered

fwiw i'm your age and never tried anything, and i'm neither religious, sheltered nor morally opposed to recreational drug use. in my case, it's for medical reasons (a fuckton of allergies, sensitivities and adverse drug reactions), but i also know a bunch of people in the same boat. like, they're just not interested and honestly there hasn't been much peer pressure around drinking/smoking/drugs in any social situations i've experienced.

Yes, in every fandom including hockey. For me personally, I happily read things covered by those warnings and don't give a shit if they're actually warned for, while the one fic I've ever felt triggered by contained nothing covered by those warnings. I'm still bitter about that fic, tbh, although it's not so much about whether it needed a warning (as upsetting as I and many other people found it, I don't think it's something you can really foresee as needing a warning, especially if you're a poor enough writer to write the fic in question in the first place) as it is about the author's conduct when called out on it.

It's tough to know what to warn for. Sometimes it's like readers can read the entire fic just through the warnings, and since they're right there when the fic is clicked it's instant spoilers. If you and others were triggered by the same thing, it must have been serious.

I used to always use CNTW on AO3, as that extra safety of "Maybe I missed something you'd like to see a warning for, so don't read unless you can handle that," but CNTW is something else people don't understand anymore.
