Okay, WHAT is it that Brendan Gallagher did we're all upset about? Something about a retweet, Caitlyn Jenner, and some kind of award? Help a nonnie out.

Unsurprising. Thanks for the link.

I was willing to write it off as him not thinking before RTing but he made it worse imo with the non-apology apology.

This is the Dancing with the Stars guy that he's upset didn't win, right? Did he do anything more special than any other wounded veteran besides, uh, go on Dancing with the Stars?

Re: Random hockey things

I actually don't know, but I would make a case that going on Dancing with the Stars with that level of visible disability is actually pretty brave. Of course, it's not a zero-sum game. Caitlyn Jenner isn't not brave because this guy also happens to be brave.

Gallagher isn't wrong in looking up to him, afaik. Galloway has done some admirable and valuable things, but it's not right to say Caitlyn Jenner didn't deserve the award. She has been through hell, but it's not a kind of hell that people like Gallagher can see and understand easily, and they're unlikely to try to educate themselves.

He does crossfit and a lot of impressive fitness stuff but according to Snopes he wasn't up for the award. http://m.snopes.com/2015/06/02/caitlyn-jenner-arthur-ashe-espys/

He received a Purple Heart, became a motivational speaker, and founded a charity that contributes to various causes including assisting other wounded veterans.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
I think he was trying to downplay the idea that it was about Jenner at all once he realized he upset people. But obviously no one is really gonna buy that since if it was only about giving credit to this other person he would have just posted a link to some kind of profile about them rather than retweeting an image that forces a comparison that isn't necessary.

The most harmless train of thought I can come up with was that he thought it would have been ok to make fun of a reality TV star getting attention for whatever (or at least I assume Caitlyn has been on the show, I know basically nothing about these people).

Re: Random hockey things

Jenner was a gold medal Olympic athlete long before she was associated with the Kardashians. She won her gold medal in Montreal, even.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
How many people know Olympic athletes from more than a couple of Olympics ago, though? I know someone who was in them thirty years ago and no one knows who the fuck she is. The Kardashian connection is probably the only thing a lot of people know.

You are making me feel old, nonny. When she won the decathlon in 76, Jenner was the biggest thing in American sports. Her picture was on boxes of Wheaties before that was a normal thing for athletes. She was definitely more than a random gold medal winner. She was huge.

Yeah, that was quite a long time ago. Think about Bernier's gaffe about Mandela, too. It took me a few minutes to remember Michael Phelps' name and I've read fic about him. The media cycle is just too huge and fast now.

Re: Random hockey things

So does Jesse Owens strike a bell for you? What about Mark Spitz? Bonnie Blair?

I just think some athletes are cultural icons, and Caitlyn Jenner is one of them.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
Nope :/

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
not-american nonny here, for what it's worth i know about jesse owens, but nothing about the other two, and i hadn't heard about jenner before either.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
Non-North American: never heard of any of them; the name Bonnie just makes me think of Bonnie and Clyde.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
This Canadian nonny thinks Jesse Owens was the black athlete who medalled in front of Hitler but has never heard of the others.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
I don't think it really matters whether non-Americans have heard of specific American athletes — unless those non-Americans insist on having an opinion on which specific American athlete is more deserving of an award.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
Lots of people don't know most of the Olympic medalists from Sochi. But Jenner isn't a random one, she's one of the famous ones that you never forget, at least in the U.S., which I grant is not where Gally is from. But hey, if Brendan Gallagher does not actually know Jenner's accomplishments than maybe that would be a good reason to not speak. If he's too young to know Jenner, he's too young to know anything about Arthur Ashe, why he has a reward named after him, and the kind of courage most in fitting with his legacy to reward.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
AYRT

Personally I am an American in my mid 20s never heard about Jenner before this. My parents probably remember those Olympics, but I imagine it's like how I know Bolt and Phelps. If I have kids I can't envision myself talking about either them because I don't really care that much about running or swimming, so unless my kids are on future Wikipedia they'll never find out about them from me. I guess it's like how non-hockey fans probably can't name Lemieux. Just about the only thing I know about the family is that one of the dads was a lawyer on the OJ case.

So from my perspective (while I don't actually believe that's what happened with Gallagher, he was probably just being dismissive and transphobic and then tried to play it off when he got called out) I can understand someone potentially not knowing/caring about some Olympic athlete in a sport they don't care about and thinking it's just a reality TV star. I don't want to turn this into another Beatles thing though.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
Yeah, I'm 23 and honestly the only context I'd ever heard of Jenner in was for being on a reality tv show, so basically in the same mental category as Paris Hilton.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
question from a non-north american: how big are the odds gallagher even knows this guy? i don't see gallagher watching dwts (do they even air it in canada?), and idk how else you'd know of this guy, unless he was on the news a lot, i guess. it's worse to me if he had no idea who galloway was before seeing that tweet.

Re: Random hockey things

From: (Anonymous)
I doubt he knew about him before he saw the tweet, but he obviously has no idea how that shit even works.

First, the award is for people who go ABOVE sports/sports' influence. Second, there is no "up for". It's not like the Oscars where 4 people are nominated and then one wins. Only one person is picked.
