The Pens signed Sestito to a professional tryout contract.

http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=777662

The Penguins had 33 fighting majors last year. The players responsible for 25 of them — Steve Downie, Robert Bortuzzo, Zach Sill, Simon Despres and Craig Adams — are no longer with the club.

That leaves the Penguins with two ways to punish opponents who take liberties with their players, Rutherford said — add a physical deterrent like Sestito or dish out payback on the power play.

“If you don't have one of those guys, you need to put some fear into the opposing team where if you're going to start being stupid with us, we're just going to rack up the goals,” Rutherford said. “We certainly have a group of guys that can do that.”

The internal debate between those two options will play itself out in the form of Sestito's training-camp tryout.

“I think we probably have that discussion on a month-to-month basis,” Rutherford said. “We had it last year. We'll continue to have it.”

I don't like that they're even considering it. What happened to "the game is changing"?

I love Ryan Wilson's article about it.

It is only a PTO so it really doesn't matter that much, but as far as Sestito's value as an NHL player? There is none. He isn't any good and whatever value people think he has is the product of a dated philosophy that some people just aren't willing to move past.

-

This is all a big fallacy. It doesn't stop any of it. It is an endless circle of violence that is only stopped if the league decides to get serious on discipline. Until then feel free to believe that talent-less plugs like Sestito prevent violence at the risk of your own ignorance.

What happened to "the game is changing"?

Penguins stopped getting powerplays, and they're desperate to try and prevent more injuries. If Tanger gets his bell rung once more his career is probably over. (Shit, we said that this time - and we haven't seen him play yet. Sure, he's cleared, but is he going to be back to the same level?)

Wilson's not wrong, but individual clubs are going to try anything to protect their players if the league is falling short.

Do we have the dates for training camps/NHL Media day yet? I know we're all waiting for October but September's a pretty good month for getting pumped about hockey too.

NHL Media Day is usually the couple days after Labor Day, which is kind of late this year (Sept 7), so they may do it the week before instead. Perhaps Sept 3 and/or 4th? I couldn't find anything specific about it.

A bunch of rookie camp announcements are starting to be made. The Lightning are hosting a rookie tournament with the Panthers, the Predators, and the Capitals. That tournament runs Sept 12-15 at Germain Arena.

The Preds rookie camp opens Sept 10 before the tournament. Regular training camp opens Sept 17 with the first full on-ice day being Friday, Sept 18.

The Bolts' rookie camp also opens Sept 10. Not sure when regular camp opens, but I would assume it would also be 9/17, and probably the same for the Cats and Caps in that tournament, as well.

Our once upon a time legendary coach Al Arbour just died.

I am really sad. I knew it was coming, he'd been unwell for some time, but still. There are tears.

huh. gotta be honest, this is a bit surprising to me. I was expecting him to be traded or be allowed to leave as a free agent next summer, but then again...when the coach loves you because he knows your dad, I guess that helps in contract negotiations.

Really good Rutherford interview here:

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/audio/the-fan-morning-show/

Talks about the importance of skill over grit for the defence, how he's big on analytics, talks up Plotnikov and Gonch (sounds like he's got a real chance of grabbing a 6-7th d-man spot) and more.

For those who don't want to/can't listen to it, there are more details here: https://www.reddit.com/r/penguins/comments/3j2ty4/jim_rutherford_on_937_the_fan_now/

GMJR was asked about being a sports parent (his son is 7): apparently his son is also playing goalie, Rutherford claims he tried to talk him out of it.

"Are you a fan of the officiating?" - I've never heard Rutherford laugh like that.

LOL.

Lombardi: Kings, Kopitar "not even in the ballpark" in contract negotiations:

http://lakingsinsider.com/2015/09/01/lombardi-kings-kopitar-not-close-in-talks/

As a fan of a team who got their stars locked up early and drama free, the Kopitar and Stamkos contract situations are interesting to follow.

I'm not a Tampa fan but I really want Stamkos locked up because of Toronto. Make the speculation stoooop.

I don't really understand how the Canadian dollar's value affects the salary cap. Is it just that as it keeps going down, Canadian clubs' revenues go down, so the salary cap doesn't grow as much? Or am I missing something?

I find it interesting that Kopitar hasn't been locked down either. I wonder if maybe he's pushing for a longer contract and now the Kings are hesitant because of how quickly Mike Richards declined.

Per @craigcustance:

"To follow up on @lakingsinsider report, gap in Kopitar/Kings negotiations a good couple million per season apart. Pretty significant.

Kopitar also has no interest in negotiating during the season so there's going to have to be some serious progress made in short term."

This is going to be fun. I expect the Kings to re-sign him though, they kind of went through the same thing with Doughty (though RFA vs UFA is a difference).

Rich Peverley officially retired and is taking a job for Stars player development. It's sad his career ended so early, but ngl I'm relieved he's not risking his health to try to make a comeback.

I feel the same, nonny. I'm glad the Stars have a place for him in their organization, too - he seems like a good guy.

A few of the Flames were marching at Calgary Pride today with You Can Play, some Canadian Olympians, the Calgary Hitmen, the Calgary Roughnecks and the Calgary Inferno.

(wow are all the sports team names in Calgary this cool?)
