#11 - Kopitar Prefers Amps That Go to Eleven

I get that you were going for some kind of smart-alec, sarcastic response here, but I actually agree with what you said: I think Malkin is a slacker.
I think he came into Pittsburgh out of obligation, and then took the first plane out of town.
Where did this impression that Malkin is super friendly with his teammates come from? Or that he's the cornerstone of the team?
When Martin left did he even mention Malkin in his goodbye letter (serious question, I can't remember). Does Malkin have any actual friends on the team (that are still there) that aren't Russian?
I think there is a deliberate distance that Malkin keeps from most of his teammates. I think it's indicative of this team's culture, and I think he has a lot to do with it.
None of this means he isn't a good player, or a good guy. But I don't think he's a good team player.
BTW, Potnikov has been in town for at least a month, with his wife, getting acclimated. Way before Malkin got there. And, yeah, I did notice that when "hanging out with the new guys on the team", Malkin went to a Steelers game with his GF, and the Russian player only.
And I won't even touch the whole playing with Putin thing, since I know people will come whining out of the woodwork to defend their fave players publicly supporting someone like that.

NA Martin didn't write a part of his letter out to Malkin like he did to the teammates he was close to, but he did mention him briefly when talking about how Pittsburgh's faves were Sid and Malkin

AYRT Yeah the culture of "this team" line really gave me pause, but it sounded like such a Rossi-ism I couldn't believe a Pens fan actually thought that way.

I don't know, I see that level of 'froth' in dedicated Pens haters a lot too. It could go either way.

Isn't that esentially Mark Madden? A lot of the stuff in that comment (especially the xenophobic feel) was essentially rephrasing stuff Madden has said.

Good point! I hadn't thought of Madden because I try to never think of Madden, but you're absolutely correct. I don't think Madden actually believes most of the nonsense he spouts like that OP seems to. I think he's just butthurt that Geno never went on his show.

Not really relevant to the bulk of your comment, but I'm a huge Ovechkin fan, and the fact that he's buds with Putin makes my skin crawl. I ignore it as much as possible and justify it to myself in some "he's sucking up to the big man strategically" way, but I know it's probably worse than that.

Whatever Ovechkin and Malkin's personal feelings, it seems pretty clear they weren't going to turn down an offer to play with Putin and children for charity. Like. You don't do that. Particularly not in Russia.

Oh, of course not. And being able to say things like "there's no way Ovi could or would turn down playing with children and Putin for charity" is part of what allows me to construct my world where Ovi goes along with Putin because it makes things better for him, his family, and Russians in general and I can pretend he doesn't actively support a near-fascist dictator. But my sensible mind knows that the best possible scenario is probably some combo of both "it's politically expedient" and "Ovi supports him."

I can see that working with Malkin who afaik only interacts with Putin professionally/for charity but doesn't Ovi have Putin's phone number? They genuinely seem buddy buddy.

I love Ovechkin, too, and don't like his Putin fanboying. I think the charitable interpretation is that he is a blindly patriotic sort/I can't expect Russians to think the same way about the Russian government as North Americans/he could get himself in a lot of trouble real fast. But it's just going to continue to be the thing I don't love about Ovi until something changes to make it more/less than that.

I don't know if you're trolling or not but I agree with some things you said. I don't really buy Geno being all that close with his teammates privately. But obviously all the Geno fans are to be mad if you write something like that.

Out of curiosity, where are you getting this insight into Geno's life? And do you think his documented close friendships on the team, such as Neal and Talbot, were made up?

Just from my own observations and what friends tell me and none of those dudes are on the team anymore. But I really have no interest in discussing this with a raging fan.

Saying anything negative about a Penguin on this meme is pointless. The butthurt pens fans will argue until they're blue in the face about something you don't even care that much about. It's easier to just keep quiet.

Why are people being so weird about Malkin's relationship with his teammates? He seems friendly enough with them. They've only had good things to say about him and he's only had good things to say about them. It's like people are freaked out because he's Russian and closest with other Russians all while ignoring all the Canadians being bffs with other Canadians.

Good point, I haven't seen that nonny criticizing the French-Canadian Penguins for how tight-knit they are.
