There is a certain degree of "I know it when I see it" that will always be colored by who your favorites are.

As far as getting a handle on the concept, I found this helpful: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-seven-levels-of-dirty-hockey/

(Also, watching NHL suspension videos, especially looking at the differences between the shorter suspensions and longer ones, was helpful to me for learning the difference.)

Yeah, this is why you should never listen to fans of either team involved in a bad hit, especially in the immediate aftermath.

Instead you go see what unbiased/less biased people are saying, and if you're a fan of a team that's involved, you use that to bolster your argument (providing they agree your team should not all be thrown in jail). :)

By bad, I meant, like, questionable. Like there's interpretation required.

Ive found r/hockey threads can sometimes be good for that, to see what fans of non-involved teams are saying about particular incidents (depending if the players/teams involved aren't especially hated by the sub as a whole, of course!)

I use /r/hockey, too. :) You can usually get a general gist of how something is being viewed. If almost everyone sees it one way and the people who see it the other way all have the same flair, it can give you a decent idea.

Thanks for linking that Grantland piece! I love McIndoe but missed that one. He has some good points in there.

I also agree with watching the DOPS videos. Shanahan did great work making those things a standard feature. Though I would prefer if Quintale (that's the guy in charge now, right?) did them now. It helps to have a face on them talking to you, rather than just Patrick Burke's voice.

Level 7: Ultimately Harmless But Still Annoying
What is it? These are the plays that aren’t necessarily “dirty” in the sense that they’re not really dangerous, but they still violate “The Code.”

Examples: Giving a goalie the snow shower. Shooting a puck into the net after a whistle. Excessive face washes. Smiling, apparently, if you’re Nail Yakupov.

Who does it? Pests, agitators, and other forms of human vermin. Players who are required by law to always be described as “guys you hate to play against but love when they’re on your team,” even though any fan with a functioning soul will hate them anyway. Also, the guy on your beer league squad who wears no. 69.

ngl, i chuckled at the last part! this article is great and helping clear some things up for me. thanks for linking it, anon!

man, I already felt bad for them before but after reading that article now I really don't envy referees for their job.
