There are a lot of really annoying ones, and I don't know she went after Steve Dangle specifically, but java-genie/@tonimacattack was the one who went after the PD A-Z series and got hugely called out for it.

Shes someone that has often elicited a "stop being on my side!" reaction, but I managed to miss a PD related kerfuffle entirely, yay.

What is a PD A-Z series?

Puck Daddy did a series where they got a (female) blogger to do a breakdown for each franchise.

Here's the index: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/puck-daddy-s-summer-series--all-30-nhl-teams-from-a-to-zed-223232077.html

I hadn't realized the series was all done by women bloggers. Cool. I enjoyed the ones I read.

Why would someone have an issue with that? Jen Neale put the project together, and I know she has done roundtables with female hockey bloggers in the past. What's wrong with highlighting their work on this?

Ugh of course tonimacattack deleted her gross tweets, but here is Jen Neale trying to engage her https://twitter.com/MsJenNeale_PD/status/638398685974425600 Toni linked to Jen's tweet promoting the series (and the fact that they were all women) and said something like "And they were all mostly straight white women, I'm not throwing a parade here".

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

NA It takes all types in any movement, but my least favorite type of attitude in any cause the types who won't celebrate any progress because it wasn't ALL THE PROGRESS ALL AT ONCE. It is cool that there are is an all female team writing right now. There should be room for even more types of women. That does not negate the fact that its good and an improvement there's an all female team writing right now.

Toni linked to Jen's tweet promoting the series (and the fact that they were all women) and said something like "And they were all mostly straight white women, I'm not throwing a parade here".

Okay, THAT is where "Go back to Tumblr" is the only appropriate response. Gross. >:(

"...all mostly straight white women"

WTF does that even mean? If you are "mostly straight," you don't get to have expanded representation in sports media? "You must be this queer to write this piece on hockey." Good grief.

The grossest part was when she started speculating about who didn't fit the white/straight model, assuming race and sexuality would be clear from a person's twitter account.

Thanks for that.

What is Toni's deal? When someone is working to change things, why attack them for not managing to change everything all at once? Honestly, that attitude strikes me as horribly entitled and insisting that your way is the only right way. Also, isn't Toni white? And so her totally ignoring actual WOC to bitch about WOC representation is, in itself, some pretty entitled privilege wielding?

I get that crusading is hard, but sometimes, I think remembering that everyone is a person and most of them are trying their best is useful. Asking questions rather than snottily writing off things, engaging people who genuinely are trying to make a difference, even if it's more incremental than one might like, it doesn't seem like a bad idea.

I would guess her intention was to avoid people praising PD for it and forgetting their past mistakes, but it kind of got away from her and it ended up seeming kind of grudgey.

Personally I have her and most of the others like that who are popular blocked (since I don't interact with them anyway) just so I don't accidentally fall into these things because it does get too cynical for me.

"Cis" got in there too. Because of the plethora of queer transwomen of color writing about hockey online.

I finally muted her the morning right before all the shit went down, and when I heard about it later I was so glad I had. There is a group of female sports fans on Twitter, mainly in hockey and baseball, who do some good stuff pointing out problems but also seem to love wading into every single hot button issue, being shocked that troglodyte male sports fans are assholes to them, and turning it into a crusading flame war. I used to know and be friendly with a number of them, but finally gave up, because I think they just like the opportunity to sling clever insults and band together in an us v them fight like it's grade school. Which pisses me off because many of these issues are important, not turf markers in a dumb flame war.

Wow. Sounds like you made a wise choice.

And what you point out upsets me, too. I want important issues to get attention, but not in a war-like way. I'd actually like to--I dunno, maybe I'm crazy--try to SOLVE the problems? Which often involves engaging with the people who are problematic, not riding in with your valkyries to chop their heads off at the slightest provocation. (That can come later...)

I believe it was kind of a mix of things that she had an issue with (they're still writing for a site that has made mistakes in terms of sexism/sexist culture, they didn't get paid, and maybe some other stuff). She got herself into trouble when she attempted to point out a lack of queer women or women of color who participated and it offended some who were misidentified and didn't feel that they should have to identify themselves just to fill quotas.

It was pretty dumb, but I guess on the lighter side of dumb since basically everyone was kind of on the same side (women writing = yay).

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

From: (Anonymous)
IDK, I honestly find in-fighting between people ostensibly on the same side is often the most vicious kind of wank.

I know "outrage hobbyist" gets thrown around too much about women on hockey twitter, but tbh tonimacattack fits the bill of that damn well. Every time she shows up on my timeline as an RT (I don't follow her) it's about some half-baked thing she's trying to drum up attention for. What was her problem with the A-Z series?

Re: 30-in-30: Toronto Maple Leafs - Steve Dangle

From: (Anonymous)
AYRT

She has all but admitted that she stays unlocked because she likes the attention/RTs/favorites she gets and the popularity she's amassed. I agree with the other nonny, she's one of those that I don't want on my side because she poisons everything.

Her "problem" was that 1) PD was apparently bragging about it being all women 2) it was "mostly" white, straight women and 3) it was some women that hate her and don't call out every single questionable thing a male blogger does.

When she tweeted about it being all white women, a ton of the contributors/readers of the series called her out for generalizing and erasing the identities of the women of color/queer women that did contribute. She gave a prototypical "I'm sorry but [stupid doubling down comment]" like three times and just kept getting more and defensive, as she is wont to do.

It is so frustrating because like I hate Puck Daddy too, but she couldn't even take accountability for erasing the identities of WOC who were involved with the project. Some people approach Twitter with this weird scorecard and it honestly bothers me more any Tumblr wank.

You are absolutely right. Thanks to helpful nonny's screenshots above, I see that her reply to learning WOC were involved was "good to know" and the closest she got to admitting fault (but not apologizing, no, never that) was "In my rush to make a point, I forgot to practice empathy."

Yeah, fuck that lady.

I am pretty sure it was not her with Steve Dangle, because I think they have interacted pleasantly as of pretty recently.
