Re: Fantasy Hockey
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fantasy Hockey
From: (Anonymous)I see what you're saying, and I don't have an issue with it. So, are you saying another week before NHL puck drop (so, September 23 would be two weeks before the season starts) or another week before September 26/27, which would be September 19/20? I'm leaning more toward that Wednesday, the 23rd, but I'd be willing to do the 19th or 20th. I'd love to hear feedback from other GMs.
I would like for league approval for trades to still be a thing. It is a changeable setting, and the other two options are commissioner approval (I don't think I alone should have that power nor do I particularly want it) or no approval at all. While I doubt there will be any issue with people trading unfairly, I like the league involvement that league approval engenders.
I'd like mention that trading can (and I hope does!) continue well into the season, so puck drop on October 7 (a night when only a few teams are playing) is not a hard deadline. Though you are right in pointing out that there is a one-day waiting period before a player is active on a GM's team roster, so that is a delay for everyone to consider.
Also, everyone should remember that the first week of fantasy hockey scoring, due to the spread-out nature of the first week's slate of NHL games, lasts from the Wednesday puck drop through the 2nd Sunday (October 7-18).

From: (Anonymous)Re: Fantasy Hockey
From: (Anonymous)This is a great point, anon! Thank you for mentioning it, because it was the original reason for picking the final week in September in the first place, and that fact entirely slipped my mind in this discussion.
As I know from my own NHL team, there are still trades, waivers, etc., that happen during training camp and preseason that can affect rankings (not a ton, because we aren't usually talking about blockbusters, but the trade I'm thinking of actually did put a player into a more desirable position with his new NHL team).
This inclines me to wait until the original last weekend in September (so, a week and a half before puck drop) plan. With the other nonnie who chimed in below, that is a couple folks who would like that date, and one who prefers the earlier of Sept. 23rd.
I'll likely make a new sub-thread asking for GM nonnies to weigh in on some of these issues (we also should decide if we want to do a dry-run draft somewhere in the next week, to see how long it takes the auto-draft to schedule us, when we find out our draft order, and to get a feel for how our GMs are picking and adjust accordingly--this might not be advantageous from a strategy standpoint, after all).
Re: Fantasy Hockey
From: (Anonymous)I meant another week before puck drops, so September 23-ish.
Re: Fantasy Hockey
From: (Anonymous)I was reminded by anon above that the reason we picked the last weekend in September originally was to get a sense of the preseason and any injuries/trades/etc that might affect our drafting lists. I feel silly for letting that issue, which was the determinant in picking that timetable, slip my mind.
I realize we're only talking about 3 or 4 days here, but it is possible that it could make a bigger difference in the health of some players (as well as showing how well players like Jamie Benn and Nicklas Backstrom have recovered from offseason surgeries) to see more of the preseason than it does in trade lead time.
I'm not ruling it out, but I think we need more input from other GMs in the league before deciding. I'm going to make a new subthread to ask about these issues (including whether we need a dry-run draft).
