it's literally about locking somebody in your basement and forcing them to love you. kinda fucked up that it became a fandom joke actually, thinking back on it.

He was, but he also had more than one article where he talked about how much he liked the "love stories" online and thought they were great. He was one of those guys who was a lot nicer IRL than he was in fic.

Ehhhh he does seem nice but I heard way too many stories about him taking underage fans onto the bus to bang (idk how true they were tbf but there were A LOT) that I can't think of him as a good dude.

True :( I've been thinking about this recently because I was so young when I first got into "the scene" (god help me) and when you're 14 and hearing about a guy you idolize fucking a 16 year old it's doesn't seem too weird (or at least it didn't to me) but when I think back on it now it's all just gross. The shit they got away with is upsetting.

I was around the same age when I got into bandom too and I was in love with so many bands :( The ages of their groupies also didn't squick me out as much then because when you're 13, 16 year olds seem so much older and mature.

Once you look back at it, you realise how most of them probably weren't. The fact that so many band guys probably took advantage of such young fans is really sick :(

Oh, yeah, I don't know if he was really that great a dude (though, tbh, I'm hard pressed to name guys in bandom I didn't hear the underage girls about), but he was still a better guy than he was in fic. Namely because in fic he was frequently a murderous cult leader.

I feel like you could get a feel of the average fan in bandom just from how many high school AUs there were and how silly some of the plots were. Back when I was 13, those fics were amazing to me but if I read them again now, I don't think I would enjoy all of them the same way.

Yeah, I was in my mid-20s in Bandom (I'm younger than Wentz but older than Stump), and I definitely felt like one of the oldest people in the room.

The only people in real life that profess to me about being in bandom are middle schoolers. Or were, until this year. Babysitting for my mom's friends never felt so awkward.

I was just thinking about those huge ensemble AUs where every single band on the planet is in some wacky scenario and SHENANIGANS happen but don't worry every single otp gets together anyways...I kinda want to find one just to see if they were actually funny/entertaining in any way but I would probably end up cringing too hard and x the f out of there, lol.

Ensemble AUs were so cute but they weren't just a bandom thing too. Like I distinctly remember a lot of my fandoms at that time doing a thing where there'd be a long multi-chaptered fic where ALL the fandom's otps were in it. It happened in Naruto, Kingdom Hearts, Bandom, Harry Potter, kpop to a certain extent etc etc.

It frustrated me a lot because I would be reading for one ship, but I'd have to get through chapters of another ship just to read about them lol. There are definitely a handful of cross-team ensemble fics in hockey RPF but fics that just focus on a single pairing seem to be a lot more popular now.

That's my opposite experience in bandom. Most of the fans I knew were in their twenties or thirties but I agree there were A LOT of very young fans too.

I found that, in general, Bandflesh was weirdly the oldest corner of the fandom.

LJ seems to have a lot more older fans compared to places like Mibba.

So that the average age for bandom was something like 16 because of that? Idk, I never was in bandom. Turns out what I thought was RPF squick was just bandom squick.

he did sort of create the murderous cult leader thing on his own, though, given the whole "vision quest into the desert" thing, the church of hot addiction, and the whole fangs up gang sign thing. he was very into the narrative, i think.

Yeah, we all made jokes about Pete lurking everywhere (well, and he did once make a goddamn shirt for the ice cream head aches community), but Gabe was the guy I really wouldn't have been surprised about.

But then, wasn't Cobra Starship the band that was on record about how they had fan fiction reading nights? And I think VickyT actually commented on someone's fic once.

...that fandom was weird.
