I love this so much. It's the kind of Mike/Jeff I want, sad and gritty but a happy ending. Too often most of the fic is just sad and gritty. It might be escapism but it's nice to believe that somehow Mike got his career together and went to Columbus of all places and won another cup, and his teammates love him and are super protective and treat Jeff like the dirt under their shoe lol.

I really liked this. It was just enough sad and gritty for me but didn't go straight into grimdark territory for me which I really appreciated. And a happy ending as well which was definitely happy was really nice to read for this pairing as well.

Spoilers I suppose for the next part?

I was a little confused about why his teammates didn't like Jeff in the first place since Mike didn't tell them anything. I mean, I could understand it after he came back to Columbus and spent a week on Jack's couch ('nothing serious' what the hell Jeff) but right at the beginning where they didn't even want to call Jeff.

I did appreciate having the Blue Jackets in there as well though.

NA

There were a lot of bits like that where I found myself mildly confused at people's motivations. Oh, and their ages/the timeline, which should have been a minor thing, but I spent the first half of the fic thinking Mike was ~40 and having to work to suspend disbelief that he was still playing in the NHL (not to mention Jack Johnson at ~38 and still in Columbus) and trying to figure out the intervening ten years. The reveal that this was actually only 5 or so years in the future came as a surprise and made some choices seem even weirder in retrospect. Also, there were some typos at inopportune moments. Basically it was one of those fics that I liked a lot but still yearned to thoroughly beta.

Yeah, like Jeff says he's thirty-five (which, I'm assuming, is also Mike's age) but then he turns thirty-seven????

Foligno's still there too lol. Maybe he and Jack just fill the pylon Scuderi ~rugged veteran~ role for the CBJ? lol.

Foligno's signed through that season, actually, and he only just turned 28. So that one's not that unreasonable. He'd be 32-33 by then.

I could buy "the Blue Jackets will literally never let Carter in Columbus go" even six years into the future, because I think that's going to be a longstanding beef, haha. So I figure that's what the author was going for there too.

They will never let it go. I expected more of it, to be honest!

Well, it says that after termination it took Mike two years to get into a team again, and he was also dealing with therapy and weaning himself off of his addiction, so he might have come to them in a really fragile state of mind and the CBJ players maybe remember that time clearly and also remember that Jeff wasn't around as much as they expected him to be in those days, since they all knew how supposedly BFF the two of them were.

I wonder why Hartnell wasn't there then, since the author was willing to handwave all sorts of players still being there, why she didn't have Hartnell involved, but I guess that would've been a whole other can of worms lol.

I liked the conversation between Tyler and Jeff about Tyler assuming Jeff's type being more twinky California boys like Beau, and then he mentioned Hanfin and Ekblad and Jeff being mortified because those two would be like at least fifteen years younger...but mostly I was happy they were still talking about Beau, like maybe in that world where Mike and Jeff get their happy ending, Beau also survives into adulthood and they talk about him which means he's relevant and not dead after like a million injuries/surgeries lol.
