My city exactly. Except for when the winter rains happen to come when it's below freezing. (We have "Watch for Ice" signs up on basically every highway bridge. They're hilarious if you're new and it's midsummer with a 117 Fahrenheit heat index, but longtime/born-and-bred residents know better. Nobody can drive on ice down here, and yes those bridges *will* ice up if it's raining and 30 Fahrenheit.)

There is a chance your city is also my city...but then again, I assume this is true for most southern cities. Hell, 32F is enough for a bridge or an overpass to freeze over and shut down everything for a day.

There is a chance that this is also my city.

It's all one city. It's the same city. The Eternal City.

/fails at this gothic meme stuff

It's clearly SOUTHERN gothic, nonnie. God is watching thesinbin, and he is disappointed. Or is he watching you kinkshame, and is disappointed? I haven't read Flannery O'Connor in awhile.

Thanks for reminding me I should be writing a paper about her mom

ayrt

Well, I'm certainly not blowing off homework right now by trying to figure out how a southern gothic fic would work. No, sir, absolutely not.

(Do Canadians have northern gothic? Like that one tumblr post about Canadian lit; "The prairie is dry and barren, like my marriage." That's not even gothic. That's just straight up Wharton.)

Ooh, a southern gothic fic wold be AMAZING! It would have to be an AU, but besides that...hmm. Depends on which author you wanted to emulate mood-wise, I suppose. (I'm partial to Faulkner myself.)

Closest thing I can think of is Fall On Your Knees.

Re: Fandom Venting

Your lack of a comma made me seriously wonder for a few seconds why you were writing a paper about Flannery O'Connor's mother.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Wait, is that not what they were saying? A paper on her mother's influence on O'Connor's work was what I was thinking.

oh, I get it.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Your comment is what made me realize they were not. I was like, damn, that is some in depth analysis. In my defense, it is late here.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
I know nothing about Flannery O'Connor and just insisted she had a famous mom, like Mary Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft.

this conversation has reminded me how much I don't miss homework, relatedly.

sa

wow, *assumed, not insisted.

Re: Fandom Venting

I live in San Antonio and I'm pretty sure some other nonnie said they did too (maybe on "what you wish fic writers knew about your city" several posts back), so maybe?

Re: Fandom Venting

There were a lot of Dallas nonnies, too.

Re: Fandom Venting

Yeah, I was the first to say "your city may also be my city" and I'm a Dallas nonnie. Your state is my state, though. Close enough!
