#23 — Brown Goes Down

So far, both series in the East are at 1-1. Many injuries, much truculence, wow. Out West, the Stars and Sharks currently leading 1-0 over the Blues and Predators, respectively. Less injuries, more kitties.

For teams no longer playing: there was the draft lottery (which the Oilers didn't win this time!) and front office turnover to talk about. Pre-emptive speculation re: the draft, free agency, and trade too.

Part of me is kind of sad that the kitty didn't wander onto the ice at the Stars/Blues game because I'm 99% sure David Backes would have just taken it home with him.

This reminds me that the subject of a team puppy as playoff motivation came up on reddit. And because it was reddit, this was the proposal:

Step 1: Buy the team a puppy.
Step 2: Make players take turns caring for the puppy.
Step 3: If players don't win the Stanley Cup, kill the puppy.

NGL - after about half a minute of mouth-agape horror - as a Blues fan I thought to myself, "This would be super effective on a team captained by Backes."

When I read articles like this about Ken Hitchcock I understand why even when it feels like the team's got magic, they're winning games in spite of their strategy not because of it.

30 second shifts for everyone! Turtle harder than the ninja turtles and if it doesn't work it's because you're not ninja enough!

Argh, I am convincing myself and half-convinced already that it's different verse same as the first. All the people hopping on the bandwagon make me nervous. We're all gonna crash and burn, friends!

Geno has a playoff beard!!!! Well, is growing one. He said before the team had bad luck when he had it for the first time and then when he didn't, that's when they won the cup so now he never grows a beard. But now he's growing one and what do you know, the team is doing great and so is he! Maybe that was the key all along for the next cup, Geno growing a beard (and not replacing a coach mid-season).

Also, someone mentioned on twitter they were pleasantly surprised that he's been acting like a grown-up in the middle of other Pens and Caps practically slicing each other on the throats with skates, so yay Geno, pls stay good.

Stars just called up Ritchie and McKenzie after the TStars got eliminated from their playoffs, and I'm beyond ready to sit Val and send in one of them. Britches in particular was doing so well with the big club until he got injured.

Bob McKenzie tweeted out this list of people interviewing for the Ottawa coaching job: Mike Yeo, Marc Crawford, Guy Boucher, Randy Carlyle, Benoit Groulx, Kevin Dineen.

I already know what I think of the first four, but I'm not that familiar with the other two? Meme opinions?

The Blues signed Ville Husso to an ELC! He's likely going to be in the AHL for a few years (depending on what happens with the expansion draft, etc), but I'm excited to see how he develops.

I was surprised that there's only one game on NBC (West game 4), but then I checked, and there were only three scheduled last year (East game 1, West games 1 and 4)

NBC has The Players golf that they've been flogging, and the Preakness, and then I didn't realize they had the rights to the French Open, but that starts next weekend. NBC: Chock full of B-level sports in May.
