If you don't want to write RL children/wives in their prompts, you should include that in your signup next time.

Did you read the puck daddy feature on Phil? I literally teared up at my desk some parts of it were so heartbreaking.

"ESPN The Magazine published a piece that chronicled Kessel’s NHL draft combine experience, through the eyes of the Columbus Blue Jackets’ managerial staff.

There are other questions. About his relationships with teammates. About his rep as a party guy. Then Boyd goes directly to the scouting report. "How would you respond to this: 'A little bit immature, needs to work a little harder in the gym, practice a little harder, needs to learn some social skills, people skills.' We'll leave it at that."

Kessel's voice falls to a whisper. "I'd say, okay...yeah a little bit...some of that stuff...it's a little hard...work on some of that stuff, I guess."

It's over soon after that. Kessel looks disheartened as he leaves. MacLean looks sad. "If what they're saying about this kid isn't true, it's criminal. Because I don't know if I ever heard the negative stuff like I have with this kid."
"

It's part of a series, I don't think it makes sense without reading the first one at least.

Re: Hockey Media

From: (Anonymous)
I can only imagine the sheer will to succeed and strength of character he has. I would have peaced out long before that point.

Re: Hockey Media

And even if it's not his having cancer (though, honestly, it might be given how skinny he was in Boston before the surgery), it doesn't matter because he's clearly better conditioned than a lot of guys - every time they bring up his body type, I just want to go la la la, here's him skating against Seguin and Seguin's abs and winning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PuUliGtNW4

Re: Hockey Media

Yeah, it's SO CLEARLY not a statement on his ability but how he looks.

It's so ridiculous. I could laugh at it, maybe, if it weren't so prevalent. It's everywhere, even in paid articles by otherwise sensible people.

Re: Fic discussion

Okay, "find" gets me 3 adorable's, 3 super's (including this super cute and super mopey boyfriend), 9 hot's, and 2 pouty's in a 3.4K fic for a total of 17 shots. So yeah, drinking game with this one is going to FUCK YOU UP and you should have 911 on speed dial and not try this alone. (Or the local equivalent of 911 if you're not a US-based nonnie).

(Also some typoes like He understands, it’s ruff, Jack just needs a little space. Ruff *is* an English word but I'm pretty sure the author meant "rough".)

And I have a hard time buying Eichel characterized as secretly shy. (I *could* buy it but this author didn't make it work for me.)

Overall, readable but *I* wasn't impressed and even for a nonnie who really really wants Eichel/Reinhardt I probably wouldn't rec this. (Lake/beyond belief's fic where they watch massage videos together worked a lot better for me. http://archiveofourown.org/works/6481756 )

/nonnie who initially suggested hockey media/fic drinking game

Anybody reading this series? It's OC/OC, two guys each of whom have their own (non-relationship-related) issues, updates fairly regularly so far. I'm a little annoyed that the everyone in the story knows what McNamara's deal is except the reader - that's just cheating, IMO. But I like the character interactions.

On more than one occasion, veteran players like Sidney Crosby have approached strength coaches and front-office officials to ask that someone—anyone—convince the baby-faced blonde to leave the weight room, lest he tire himself out.

Sidney Crosby's teammates don't do the right thing when he asks them to? Bad leadership! /s

Re: Gossip/Player's Lives.

From: (Anonymous)
CW: brief domestic violence mention (Galchenyuk)

Given that iirc at least some of the Montreal media were attempting to claim Galchenyuk's (hopefully) ex-girlfriend hitting him was because she caught him cheating with Devante Smith-Pelly, yeah, Montreal media genuinely outing someone seems an entirely likely scenario.

(Now wants a fill for "PK's involuntarily outed and has to deal with the fallout of being both black and the first out NHL player in a city with media that eats their own" even worse than I already did. Bonus points for Carey being an awesome BFF and Beaulieu and Gallagher being dicks about it.)

Re: Gossip/Player's Lives.

From: (Anonymous)
Wait, what? I thought they were claiming that she thought he was cheating on her with another girl at the party and that Smith-Pelly also happened to be at said party. Granted, I didn't follow the whole thing that closely and I don't read French, so I easily could have missed something. But I got the impression that most of the "he was cheating with Devante Smith-Pelly!" jokes weren't coming from the media.

(This is not to say that the Montreal media wouldn't out someone or that they're not horrible, because they really are, and I have no trouble imagining them doing something that shitty.)

Do all their prompts include RL family? If not then maybe focus on one that doesn't?

Re: Fic discussion

I loved Geno being a PROFESSIONAL about his job (making sure the camera catches his expression even while he's actually into the sex, being pissy about new guys fucking up and making his life harder, "oh shit wardrobe is going to complain about me fucking up the snapback", "I need to figure out shooting schedules so I can film a bunch more with Sid", etc). It made it feel more realistic (by porn AU standards at least).

*********************************************

Also anything with sex workers that *doesn't* have them quitting for Twu Luv gets an automatic bonus point from me. I will never not be pissed about that K/T a few years back where Kane is a successful street-level pro and Toews is an escort and the fic *still* has them quit despite neither of them having a clear alternative source of revenue/exit plan and the narrative not backing up any kind of either a) really hating their jobs, b) "I'm not cool having sex for money any more because I'm seriously *with* someone" or c) jealousy on either of their parts (iirc, anyway).

(I'm more into the approach taken by something like labellementeuse's Benn/escort!Seguin or rest's Benn/stripper!Segs, both of which have at least a little onscreen discussion about dating a sex worker and neither of which ends with Segs quitting.)

Carl Hagelin has that one locked up. Even between periods or directly after a game, his hair looks like he just stepped out of a salon.

As someone who generally looks like she's been pulled backward through a hedge about five seconds after leaving the house, I can only conclude he's some kind of wizard.

Re: Eyebrow Bracket - Round 4!

From: (Anonymous)
As the anon who nominated him in the first place, I was so thrilled when I saw he was still in it. <3

He's very smiley all the time (when not being all murder eyes). Besides he awesome flow, he also has a very nice hockey butt. His reaction to almost hitting Braden Holtby with a slapshot when Holtby's mask came off was great and he just seems like an all around good dude.

There are worse players you could pick to be irrationally fond of is all I'm saying. :D

Re: Eyebrow Bracket - Round 4!

Nope, he's out of it.

I want to read this, but I can't read it all in sitting and my mobile browser keeps losing my place. I really wish chaptering very long fics was standard for this reason. :(

Re: General fandom discussion - May AO3 fic stats

From: (Anonymous)
Thanks, nonnie! Always love the stats!

Every month I think THERE'S NO FIC AT ALLLLL, but then I see these posts and it's like "huh... there were a few I guess" lol.

Re: General fandom discussion - May AO3 fic stats

From: (Anonymous)
If any of it was any good is the question...

Re: Eyebrow Bracket - Round 4!

From: (Anonymous)
I wouldn't be so sure. The Eyebrow People™ who I thought were gonna win/go far for sure were out pretty early. Deke is just full of surprises.

Re: General fandom discussion - May AO3 fic stats

Lol true... But even only volume-wise it's always more than I thought.

Re: Eyebrow Bracket - Round 4!

He kind of looks like he's balding here, but maybe that's only bad lighting.

Re: Hockey Media

I'm rooting for the Sharks (old guys without a Cup + Cupless franchise + everybody I *really* wanted is out) but Kessel getting a Cup ring would be a nice consolation prize.

If his Pittsburgh media presence bears any resemblance to his actual off-camera self, the people skills/"locker room cancer" issues are just as much bullshit as the "too fat to play" body ones. (Also, although I seriously doubt *Kessel's* anywhere on the autism spectrum, something about him getting told he needs to learn social/people skills makes my neurodivergent self cringe.)

Excellent point. IIRC, the whole thing started because of a discussion about Dylan Strome and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and where are they now?

I still think Strome was-- perhaps unfairly-- hampered by his bizarre roster pic. Poor kid. (and yet, LOL)
