Re: Fandom Venting

Oh. I thought we were talking about on the same team?? Doesn't the context make it clear who they're talking about?? I feel like every team has basically the same set of hockey nicknames - minus a couple of actual creative ones.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
It defeats the purpose of a nickname if you have to append three words to it. Hockey nicknames are totally unoriginal and the idea that one should be unique to a player you like is silly. The world doesn't revolve around your team.

I thought they called him Murrs?? None of them have any ability to anunciate though so I might be mishearing.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
No, it's Muzz.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
There's a Soupy on half the teams in the league.

Re: Fandom Venting

da

The players themselves call him Murr (or some variation of it -- Murrdawg, lol). I've seen fans call him Muzz, but haven't heard players do so (but I don't follow their media that closely so who knows).

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Okay, why hasn't Murrdawg caught on? It wins my vote for best variation

Well this at least makes me feel less crazy. Minus Geno and Tanger I guess maybe my pens fan friends don't really call players by nicknames of their own creation??

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
agreed.

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Huh? Geno and Tanger aren't fan-created nicknames at all? Or do your Pens fan friends call them other things?

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Sorry. That was 2 really separate thoughts that I combined and made wicked confusing.

Most of my pens friends don't have fan-created nicknames.

And if they call players by nicknames they use the mainstream ones.

And I wish Sidney Crosby's mainstream nickname was Bing. But maybe it's funnier because Kris Letang is the only one who calls him that??

Re: Fandom Venting

I think they need to clarify who the hell they mean on the kinkmeme, but I don't think it's really an issue otherwise.

Muzz seems like a WBS thing, because the very first time Sullivan gave a presser about Murray in the NHL, he called him Muzz.

"They watched Monday’s morning skate prior to Game 4 and met Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski, among other NHL stars, for a quick chat prior to a round of media interviews. Matthews marveled at Thornton’s “big body” and the two shared a personal moment, chatting about Switzerland..."

It makes me a little sad when nickname change during a team change. (Sometimes they get stupider, which makes me frown.)

Re: Fandom Venting

From: (Anonymous)
Well think of poor Junior! He's gone through a billion nicknames, all because he's no longer the sole Kuni.

Re: Fic discussion

Agreed on the ending. Actually, in general, I felt like the balance and pacing were sort of off. It was a looooot of exposition, then finally some horror/action that was cool but definitely could have been cooler and less contained, and then boom, a neat little summary of what happened after. Way more readable and likable than most of the similarly-flawed fics I've read in this fandom, though.

What is <i>up</i> with your team? –– non-SCF edition

For those of us with non-playoffs news.

Sorry about the html not working in titles. Whoopsie.

Anyway, Holtby's marching in D.C.'s pride parade! He's consistently good on LGBTQ* issues and came out pretty strongly about them before Sochi, and now he is (according to WashPo), the most prominent athlete ever to march in the parade. Patrick Burke had nice things to say about his family too.

I'm so happy about this! And if some comment sections are anything to go by, this is making homophobic Caps fans decamp in droves, which -- good riddance.

He's a case in point

I've seen allusions to the bad comment sections, but haven't encountered them myself. Even reddit has been positive about it. :) But go Holtby!

Re: Fic discussion

About your parens, I think the author did the exact right thing for a situation like you described where a fic has a so-called non-canon pairing in the background by not tagging the relationship and putting it in the author's note. Putting that author's note in doesn't seem very hard to me? I"m not sure what you mean by there being no easy way to do it.

Centeral Mystery & Ending Spoilers:

[] That said, I don't think Taylor Hall/Jordan Eberle are a background pairing in this fic. Connor McDavid is the POV character, but their relationship is still a major plot point. I think this particular fic would have been better served by having both the gen & slash tags added in the "category" field.[]

I liked this fic. I'm not into super creepy horror stuff, and I thought there was a good balance. Enough horror to make it feel like there were real stakes, but not so creepy that I'll be dwelling on it in the wee hours of the day.

Sorry, for the spoiler tag fail requiring a second click. I did not mean to nest that last paragraph inside the other one like that. Oops.
