Probably a good thread leading up to the Combine/Draft/long summer of no hockey and looking into the future. Apparently Columbus might be trying to trade away 3rd? Discuss.

Rumors are Minnesota is willing to trade their pick. Which considering we have no seconds, no thirds, no fifths, and no sixths, seems like an INCREDIBLY FUCKING BAD IDEA. Have they seen how incredibly fucking bad Iowa is?

Ugh. I don't even blame GMCF for this. I blame Leipold for being a shitty, pressuring owner who wants to win now and doesn't understand how to build teams.

sa I'm hoping the Canes draft more Fins. For my entertaining value, I hope a teams get multiple first round picks consecutively.

My team is in the unusual position of not having an obvious pick, so I'm getting unreasonably possessive of literally every prospect. Then getting upset @myself for noticing when they're cute because they're (barely not) jailbait.

I know pretty much nothing about this year's draft class...Anyone care to fill me in? I'd love to hear about your faves if you have some already! Recs for articles, podcasts, videos, etc focused on one or more of them are extremely welcome too. Thanks!

Patrik Laine (Finland estimated to go 2nd, has been talk of him being equal with Matthews) gave this super chill interview during the draft lottery.

Matthew Tkachuk is an American forward projected to go somewhere in the top 10 (most lists I've seen put him at 4-6). He's also an NHL baby (his dad is Keith Tkachuk) and he used to attend Blues practices with his dad when he was a kid. His family also billeted some of the team's rookies/younger players, including David Backes and Lee Stempniak, so he knows some of the older players already in the league.

His OHL team, the London Knights, just won the Memorial Cup in overtime and he scored the winning goal. He also plays for Team USA and is good friends with Christian Fischer (a Coyotes prospect from last year's draft class and one of Auston Matthews' bffs). He's also fairly good friends with Auston Matthews, as far as I can tell.

He plays on a line with Christian Dvorak and Mitch Marner on the London Knights, too, and apparently he takes great joy in annoying the crap out of Dvorak. There's an article about them here:

Oh, great. A year we need to draft a specific position, and it's a bad year for that position. No prospects worth taking until at least the third round, if not the fourth. Joy.

Ryan Johansen's younger, prettier brother Lucas is up for the draft! I can only imagine the horrors he's lived through.

From watching Oilers' and Leafs' videos with Jakob Chychrun, I have come to the conclusion that he is very cute and kinda dumb. The dude has no clue what the phrase "I'm an open book" means.

I'm not sure how he feels right now about his role in growing the game as a half Latinx kid from a non-traditional market but I really hope he uses his little bit of fame to do some good on that front. He doesn't have to do anything of course, and shouldn't feel like he does, but I would sure love it if he did.

It would give my Marner/Strome soul LIFE if Arizona somehow managed to flip Strome+whatever for Matthews. Like, I'm not sure if Arizona's actually trying to make the trade happen and Toronto probably doesn't want to give that pick, but if they did...
