It's misspelled in the entire fic :( ensemble AUs like this can be so fun, if the author actually bothers to learn anything about the people that they choose to throw in there. Some parts of this were so cute but everybody seemed either personality-less or slightly OOC and it threw me off.

I'm not sure this is really of interest to anyone here, but it made me pretty emotional so I thought I'd share and it's always nice to broaden your horizons on foreign hockey drama, right?

There is (now "there was"...) this German hockey club playing in the DEL (highest league) called Hamburg Freezers (Jamie Benn played for them during the lockout, I think?) and 5 days before the application deadline for a new DEL licence the owners (AEG who also own, among others, the LA Kings and the Eisbären Berlin) said "nope they cost too much" and said they wouldn't apply for a new licence (which costs €800,000). They really didn't tell anyone before (not staff or players) and already sold season tickets for 16/17 etc. :/

The captain of the Freezers (Christoph Schubert, he used to play in the NHL) tried to save the club basically all by himself (with help from others though, for example a field hockey player who won olympic gold and some footballers, I think?) and managed to raise almost 1 million euros in 5 days, but the owners still didn't even want to apply for a new licence for even one year to buy some time for them to find a new owner or sponsors. So now the club just closes and the players don't have a club anymore at the moment and the staff are all out of a job. :(

Here are two articles with more info (the only ones I could find in English with my German google, lol):

http://www.dw.com/en/captain-schubert-fights-to-save-freezers-ice-hockey-team/a-19277269

http://www.dw.com/en/bid-to-save-hamburg-freezers-del-ice-hockey-team-comes-up-short/a-19281624

I didn't even like the Freezers much, but this is still so sad to me after having followed their efforts over the last week. :(

Oh yikes. I could maybe understand if they didn't want to go digging around too much for characterisation (I think nonnies have said before they feel it's stalkerish with young players?), but spelling names right should still be like, courtesy or something lol.

Ugh, that entire mess made me so sad, too. And I can't believe how shitty the owners acted, not even telling their players and staff a little earlier at the very least :(

Re: Random Hockey Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
That is incredibly shitty all around. It would have been bad enough with the owners acting like that, but when they managed to raise the money for the license themselves and they still refused... :/

Re: Random Hockey Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Nearly 1 million euros in 5 days, and the owners still didn't realize there was a significant potential to recoup at least some of their losses if they ponied up the remainder of the license fee and looked for buyers? That's just so stupid, on top of being fucking shitty to the fans, staff, and players. They're going to lose so much more money than they probably would've otherwise.

DA

I think in the article it said there would have been significant other fees during the season - the crowdfunding was aiming for 2 million euros - so they didn't actually get all of it. But for 5 days, that's incredible. The smart thing for the owners to do would be apply for the license, let the crowdfunding go on until they've raised as much as they can, and then sell the team for whatever they could.

Yeah, they said they're running a 2,5 million euro loss every year, so this wasn't "enough", but it's still super shitty and just shows they weren't really interested in saving the club. :/ Especially because the club sells a lot of tickets by German standards and with a better concept they might have been able to run the club without a deficit, especially since they own the arena.

Buuuuut, it's rumoured they really only wanted the arena all along and have been waiting to dump the Freezers. :/

Yeah, to be totally fair I don't know a ton about some of these guys either (including "Brindecat" which my phone just tried to autocorrect to "bro decaf"). But the spelling problem+the flatness of most of them combined together just made a of of the characters seem unnecessary to the basic plot. Even Ekblad was pretty non-descript and learning more about him doesn't require social media stalking a kid like it would for Bro Decaf.

Re: Random Hockey Thread

Yeah, that's what I don't understand. That's a HUGE figure, especially for German ice hockey (some DEL teams have a season budget of only 5 million euros). And it's a good story! They could have made a profit off this for sure if they actually tried, but I think they already made up their minds and are planning to make more money with the arena (which they also own) by renting it out more often during the weekends. It's so shady and I feel bad for all the people who were blindsided by it and couldn't do anything even though they really tried.

da

If that rumour is true, then they're even shittier than I thought.

And really, they've invested money a while know, what would have been the harm in giving the team one more season to try and find a new owner/get a deal done with the city chipping in (that's how short-term my hometown basketball team was saved), I mean a million dollars in five days being raised goes a long way to show that there is interest and support and I'm sure they could have raised more :/

Well, I'll be calling him "Bro Decaf" from now on.

Wow, that's super shady. I'm angry on behalf of everyone they screwed over in the first place, but if they've been planning on doing it all along and still only gave them five days notice, that seems even worse somehow.

Would it have been possible to sell the club without selling the arena? I admit I don't know much about how that works in Germany.

Yeah, this kind of effort especially in this very short time makes it obvious that interest was there! And it's sad to think they would have made it if given the chance. :(

Well, it's really only a rumour as far as I know, but I really don't feel like I owe AEG only to say nice things about them lol. Apparently they wanted to build an arena in Munich (where the Freezers were located before, called the Munich Barons), but the City of Munich wasn't really interesting of giving that much land to foreign investors. So AEG bought the hockey team and moved them to Hamburg (which is something that doesn't really happen in German ice hockey) because they could build an arena there, and have the new hockey team be a continuing advertisement for their shiny new arena. Then in 2011 they first implied that the team wasn't profitable, but in the end didn't sell them since "they didn't find anyone". (It's rumoured Red Bull wanted to buy them but "someone" was against it, I've read public opinion? But I don't know why AEG would care so much about that. Red Bull later went and bought the current team in Munich btw.) They say they kept looking for buyers but I don't really believe it since they didn't wait to come forward with their "MORE CONCERTS AT BETTER TIMES IN THE ARENA NOW!!!!" plans now.

Oops, this grew longer than I anticipated.

Re: Random Hockey Thread

Yeah, club owners don't necessarily own the arena and I think their plan was to sell the club, but keep the arena in the first place.

And not all clubs have owners in the first place by the way. My club for example only has various sponsors, but no owner. (And no arena, lol.)
The club then just has to rent the rink and figure that into their budget. I'm not really sure which is more common in Germany, but both work.

It's the five days I keep getting stuck on. It's such a short amount of time and it's clear no one (except the owners...) knew about it. :(

Hmmm. What happens when two incubi have sex with each other? Can two incubi have sex with each other, or do they need to have threesomes with some human proxy every time to make it work? (Louis is just volunteering for the good of your relationship, guys!)

For the good of the team, nonnie! Can't have the dynamic duo keeling over from blue balls/starvation.

... how does a diabetic incubus work? "As much as I'd love to join in on this orgy, Duke, right now anything more than a mediocre handjob would send me into a coma."

Re: Fandom Goggles

If sex is like food, then it's more about scheduling than anything, right? "Wait, Duke, Saturday game means we're going to be playing when we're usually fucking - I'm going to need at least a handjob to tide me over and avoid hypoglycemia." Unless sex is just like, super greasy fast food, in which case he can only have it in moderation.
