Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)Buuuuut, it's rumoured they really only wanted the arena all along and have been waiting to dump the Freezers. :/
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)If that rumour is true, then they're even shittier than I thought.
And really, they've invested money a while know, what would have been the harm in giving the team one more season to try and find a new owner/get a deal done with the city chipping in (that's how short-term my hometown basketball team was saved), I mean a million dollars in five days being raised goes a long way to show that there is interest and support and I'm sure they could have raised more :/
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)Yeah, this kind of effort especially in this very short time makes it obvious that interest was there! And it's sad to think they would have made it if given the chance. :(
Well, it's really only a rumour as far as I know, but I really don't feel like I owe AEG only to say nice things about them lol. Apparently they wanted to build an arena in Munich (where the Freezers were located before, called the Munich Barons), but the City of Munich wasn't really interesting of giving that much land to foreign investors. So AEG bought the hockey team and moved them to Hamburg (which is something that doesn't really happen in German ice hockey) because they could build an arena there, and have the new hockey team be a continuing advertisement for their shiny new arena. Then in 2011 they first implied that the team wasn't profitable, but in the end didn't sell them since "they didn't find anyone". (It's rumoured Red Bull wanted to buy them but "someone" was against it, I've read public opinion? But I don't know why AEG would care so much about that. Red Bull later went and bought the current team in Munich btw.) They say they kept looking for buyers but I don't really believe it since they didn't wait to come forward with their "MORE CONCERTS AT BETTER TIMES IN THE ARENA NOW!!!!" plans now.
Oops, this grew longer than I anticipated.
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)And yeah, sport1 of all sites gave me a glimpse into the weird history there (didn't get into hockey until a couple years ago), and yes it's really hard to believe that they were looking for a new owner when they made that announcement with five days left!
And I'm also clueless about why they wouldn't have sold to Red Bull if it would've netted them a profit? Maybe they wouldn't have liked a strong rival given that Red Bull obviously has money?
But otoh, what was the point of owning a second team themselves, then? Makes the theory that they really only ever wanted the arena once they realized the team wasn't profitable quite plausible.
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)Yeah, on top of being shitty it's all just so weird that I'm this close to going full conspiracy theory believer~.
I really wonder what will happen with the Eisbären Berlin down the line, too. The fans I know are mostly like "pffft, it won't happen to us", but I wouldn't be so sure? A couple more bad seasons (that aren't even that bad, you don't know suffering, Berlin!!!) and let's talk then. Apparently AEG wants to invest in the infrastructure around the Mercedes Benz Arena, but it's not like you can't do different things with that arena either... I would not be surprised at all when they announce that they "don't see a profitable market in Germany" in a couple of years.
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)(just my impression given that they have soccer, Alba and Eisbaeren and while soccer always is a stable presence and the worst thing to ever happen is relegation, probably, both Alba and Eisbaeren have had highs and are now a little bit more down to earth and still lots of support and fans)
would lead to the city chipping in if push came to shove, but with only five days notice - and I wouldn't put it past these owners to do the same shitty thing all over - it might be too little time anyways.
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)Berlin has a handball team in the first league too btw (Füchse)! AND a succesful volleyball first league team (BR Volleys). I feel like they have to be successful at sports because they're the capital lol.
Hamburg used to be big in sports too, and not only football, which makes it a bit sadder because not only did they lose their hockey club, their first league handball club (HSV Handball) went bankrupt this year too and was dissolved. And apparently their women's volleyball team lost a sponsor and had to be relegated because of that (from the first league to the second league). (I know too much about German sports apparently, lol.)
It's all about money anyway, so I wish at least the people that had the money in this case would try to be decent people. Fingers crossed for Berlin in the long run now, they have my favourite team name after all (well, 2nd because I'm partial to my team). :D
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)I obviously know too little about German sports outside of those I care about, (yay for Berlin and oh damn, that really sucks for Hamburg sports, aside of my hate of HSV I really like the city, loved to see Grizzlys games there and teams going away/being relegated due to money issues always sucks :/ )
Fingers crossed for Eisbaeren for sure, and for there to never be "lol, five days" situation ever again.
(Their name is a great one for sure and my forever fave played for them a little while so I really root for them not getting shafted like the Freezers did, apart from obviously no team deserving to be treated that way to begin with :/ )
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)I just noticed all my weird grammar mistakes. Sorry... Don't talk and comment at the same time, kids.
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)Would it have been possible to sell the club without selling the arena? I admit I don't know much about how that works in Germany.
Re: Random Hockey Thread
From: (Anonymous)And not all clubs have owners in the first place by the way. My club for example only has various sponsors, but no owner. (And no arena, lol.)
The club then just has to rent the rink and figure that into their budget. I'm not really sure which is more common in Germany, but both work.
It's the five days I keep getting stuck on. It's such a short amount of time and it's clear no one (except the owners...) knew about it. :(
