Yeah, but they're just really bad.

+1 this is all so eyeroll-worthy. Of course they cap off a season of melodramatic pessimism with the belief their ragtag group of quirky characters magically pulled it together in the end instead of, I dunno, putting some trust into their team.

Yeah I'm just going to assume OP doesn't know much about the roster of any other team. The Pens are what elite teams with good GMs look like.

I feel like there are so many recently. Maybe they're friends and one of them stumbled upon ao3?

The Kessel snub is so weird. Wasn't he the leading scorer for team USA in Sochi? And he's really the only major US men's player I get excited about.

Whatever, I'm going to be pleased for Murray, because it'll be great experience for him, and I'm not going to be salty about Kessel or Letang, because they both need to rest. Honestly I'd much rather Maatta hadn't been selected for that same reason.

I am literally laughing at your inclusion of hotdoggate, just like 99% of people were when it broke. That article should have been a parody about how OTT Toronto media was re: Kessel.

"in narrative, they're a ~glamor~ franchise that Knows How to Win"

I wouldn't say that. They've been labelled as chokers and underachievers - yes, they're a perennial playoff team, but that's expected of them. The narrative has been that with their stars, they should be going deep every year, and it's a failure of leadership/management/heart/grit that they haven't. Hell, they went 2-3 down and someone published a thinkpiece about how the Pens were losing to a lower seed again. They were one game down, for heaven's sake! But they were expected to bomb out embarrassingly, just like the Capitals were expected to "choke". (They didn't choke, IMO, but that's the narrative for you.)

Alright, Saint Monica.

I mean, most people were laughing, but it was a symptom of picking on him in stupid fucking ways - like the business with how few times he skated that summer, fussing about conditioning, etc.

It's so funny how you said "I wouldn't say that" and then described the thing you wouldn't say.

Anyone with a brain, sure, but he still has that redemption / proving himself / proving those assholes wrong narrative attached to him. If you don't want to call it being a misfit, that's fine, but there are plenty of people with no particular stake in either the Pens or the Leafs who are absolutely delighted by the potential of Kessel lifting the cup.

Which isn't to share the Sharks don't also have plenty of narrative. Joe Thornton also gets to try and prove those assholes wrong. I don't think it's quite the same narrative, but still there. And people rooting for one team or another based on their narrative is part of what sports is for, right?

Personally, I'm tickled a Boston castoff is going to win the Cup, not matter which team wins.

By all means I should hate you, and I did, deeply until that last game against late in the season.

But damn it all if the Penguins aren't a fun team to watch!

And some of your fans are in fact insufferable (still holding a grudge against anyone who made fun of my team making playoffs) , but so are some of any teams' fans and while most of my new found love is probably rooted in how happy your team makes one of my dearest friends, it's been a lot of fun watching them succeed!

Everyone has injuries

Look, I'm not invested in the fight about whether or not we're scrappy losers, but how dare you suggest our ability to get injured is of anything less than elite caliber. We went into the playoffs with our backup backup goalie. It was an absolute clinic in stupid poorly-timed injuries.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I want Kessel/Thornton fic now where they commiserate about being Boston castoffs. Kissing optional.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Honest question - does anyone else thinks Phil's legitimately just shy?? He seems like suuuuuuuch an uncomfortable panda in media situations. But seems universally loved by teammates. I just wonder if he's shy and his uncomfortableness reads as standoffish and suddenly he's a locker room cancer.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
the fact that they're a perennial playoff team makes them a glamour team!!

I have literally never seen the Pens described as chokers, and most of the underachievement hand wringing is focused on Crosby and how much more he could have done without the injuries. But "chokers"??? wat

Yeah, aside from in the eyes of a vocal minority, the only way that Kessel genuinely didn't fit in Toronto was that he didn't fit their rebuild plan going forward. He was too good (for tanking), too old (for their future plan) and too expensive. That's why they had to trade him.

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
And he won his first game, too. <333 No matter what happens, the fact that we got this far was founded on Zatkoff playing his fricking ass off in game 1. I read a quote the other day where he was basically like "If I can keep it to 3 goals against, we've got a chance."

I was always fond of him has a person - he just seemed like a really cool dude, even if his hockey made me want to knock my head against things sometimes. I am so pleased he got to have that moment of the entire arena chanting his name in appreciation (even if the arena couldn't figure out whether to use his first or last name, lol).

Re: SCF Predictions Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think that's the conclusion most people have - he's apparently very big into organizing team social events, or at least was in Toronto - and is really funny, but he's reticent and his grammar can be a little bit odd for someone who's obviously a native English speaker. But yeah, not being gregarious = locker room cancer; being gregarious = locker room cancer; being neither = being a locker room cancer. I'm not sure if the Toronto media approves of anyone's personality or lack thereof.

I also want this. Seguin and Hamilton can come too if they like.

AYRT

I... didn't say that though. Time and again people have said the problem with the Penguins is that they don't know how to win, that their skill isn't enough, they aren't resilient, they'll blow a lead or melt down.

To be fair, in the past some of that was pretty true.

*waggles eyebrows* Yes, who will they ship out of town next? We need to know. For orgy planning purposes.

I have literally never seen the Pens described as chokers

I'm trying to take your argument in good faith, but I find this really, really hard to believe. Are you a west coast fan? I just don't see how a person could follow the eastern conference with any attention and not see this.

Both of these narratives (the one you're talking about and what ayrt is talking about) exist in the media/in mainstream fandom in abundance. You remember best what annoys you most or strikes you as most ridiculous. If you don't like the Pens, it's probably all the Crosby apologia. If you're a Pens fans, it's the abundance narratives that do exist (especially among Pittsburgh media and a large portion of the fanbase) about how they're a team of chokers, mentally weak, underachieving, etc. It's not rocket science. Someone posted an espn article about how the Pens have underachieved the last seven years to r/hockey even today. People act like their selective, biased experiences and memories are "reality" -- just because you haven't seen something doesn't mean it doesn't happen and people are making it up wholesale to be ~dramatic.
