I started writing Jones/Reimer with Jones/Quick in the past and I realized that I'm probably way more into Jones/Quick, but I can't think of any non sex-related plot for them right now and I just want to write something substantial for once.

I have roughly 6k of the Jones/Reimer done and I can't finish that either because of this wall I've hit.

Hopeless pedant here, but Apocalypse isn't part of the MCU. The X-Men movie franchise is all Fox.

My biggest issue is that I kinda feel done with fandom in general and have been feeling increasingly that way for a couple of years, except for hockey, but I still have a voracious reading appetite.

I read a lot of reddit, now.

It's weird, I've written a few kinky things before, even id kinks, but in this one I'm really just going for it and using all my favorite stuff and it's like, noooo, people will know what I'm into. Even though likely the only people reading it will also be into it lol.

Ah, true. I keep thinking MCU is everything marvel in the comics, but the movies are split up.

Ah, yeah. I know that feel. And with my team out, I haven't had a bunch of articles and Internet comments to read either. There's only so much I want to read about politics.

Yay, I'm glad those worked for you. Baseball rpf really is all about the unhappy ending - heck, most of the newer stuff is still bittersweet. I think it's the nature of baseball, though.

Why would it be truer of baseball than other sports? Honest question - I've never watched any baseball.

I'm also from Texas and I find those very odd constructions.

It's much more slowly paced than hockey - meditative, more focused on duels between hitter and pitcher - and there's like 4 levels (AAA, AA, high A and low A, plus rookie leagues and fall leagues) of minor leagues, so busting into the majors takes longer. I also think the contrast between the minors and the majors is greater than the AHL and the NHL, but that could be bias. IDK, there's some kind of baseball nostalgia/fatalism with it that I don't find in hockey. I imagine I feel about about baseball like Canadians feel about hockey, though.

Someone last thread (maybe it was even you) said something last thread about a lot of baseball rpf writers infusing their stories with a ~mystical~ reverence for the game which I thought was a pretty good description of a lot of baseball rpf fic, especially the older ones.

I keep thinking I should get back into reading books, which I used to read a ton of but haven't really done in years, but I try reading original m/m or f/f and nope out half the time, and original science fiction seems to be even more of a wank factory than fandom these days.

Re: Fandom Venting

Baseball fic also tends to have a lot more baseball in it. I think because it's a small fandom, people tend to get into it who are already big fans of the game, versus hockey where some people don't even watch much hockey, because the guys become fandom composite creations.

Two of the five best forwards in the world might have something to do with it.

Yeah, I had been talking about a spring cleaning/finish your fics fest, but much like with my many WIPs, I got distracted and abandoned the idea for things that seemed more fun.

I always feel kind of weird being an American who enjoys sports who has zero nostalgia for baseball. I mean, I have a bit for football and for hockey, but baseball? No. None. I also don't know anyone who played it as a kid. We all played either optimist soccer or pee-wee hockey. Or both.

Though, I mean, I did grow up in the land of the Twins and the Brewers. Does anybody feel nostalgic about the Twins or the Brewers?

It turns out Puck Daddy is doing a series of articles on similar topics. Here's on each team's celebrity fans:

Of most interest to me by far is that Kristi Yamaguchi is married to the Sharks' color commentator, whom she met at the 1992 Olympics when he was playing for Team USA.

Both of Kessel's parents were athletes: father Phil Kessel, Sr., a college quarterback at Northern Michigan University, was drafted by the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL), spending his first year on the injured reserve and then subsequently being released.

Wikipedia never says what his mom did athletically. Anyone know?

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, agreed. I feel like baseball fic is more about baseball, whereas hockey fic is about hockey players. I would be really surprised by, say, abo baseball fic. (Though I think there was that fic with either ARod or Jeter and tentacles ...)

I've tried, but I don't have the attention span or more accurately, the ability to concentrate on something that's any more intellectually demanding than fic. Which sounds like I'm ragging on fic, but it's more my inability to manage anything that isn't immediately digestible where I'm already invested in the story. I have no idea how to correct that.
