Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)Kessel got a lot of shit in Toronto and elsewhere. It was implied he was locker room poison, that he dragged down teams he was on, that he didn't care about winning. Hell, he didn't even make the World Cup roster despite being top US scorer at Sochi. It's really nice that the year after he gets out of Toronto, he's a champion, and it makes me happy to see him being appreciated by team, fans and Pitt media. (I'll allow that the Toronto team never seemed to not appreciate Phil, professionally and personally.)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)I do kinda side-eye the Pittsburgh media for their self-congratulatory tone now considering they also bashed Kessel quite a bit during the season when he was snakebitten. (Looking at you, Super Genius.)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 05:09 am (UTC)(link)Oh, well, that explains everything. UGH.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)I enjoy seeing him appreciated, too. That's different from calling him a reclamation project or comparing him to a dog. Kessel having gotten a lot of undeserved shit doesn't mean that no one knew he was a good player, and it doesn't justify being condescending about him. If you haven't seen people making those remarks, that's fine. It's obviously not you or your point of view I'm venting about, although it is even a little diminishing to say "we made you a cup champion" when the whole reason the Pens traded for him was because they thought he would help make them cup champions, not to benevolently give an opportunity to a guy they felt bad for.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)I guess that's fair enough. He was never a reclamation project like, say, Daley (And I love Daley, but his Chi numbers were terrible - he went from an afterthought to a top pairing guy.) And I agree the abused dog stuff is nonsense.
Well, we made him a Cup champion, he made us a Cup team. Definitely it wasn't an act of charity!

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 01:15 am (UTC)(link)It's inarguable he's done far better in Pittsburgh than he did in Chicago, whether that's system, coaching, or just a coincidence of luck.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 02:31 am (UTC)(link)I honestly just hate hearing any player (or even any person tbh) referred to as a "reclamation project." It grinds my gears more with Kessel because Kessel was always a great player, arguably the Pens' best player in the playoffs and also because of the accompanying baggage of fat jokes/other things being discussed in the thread. But the Pens didn't trade for Daley in order to make him their "reclamation project," either. They identified a player with value that wasn't being put to use, one whose strengths (which were familiar to a lot of people, although not necessarily Chicago fans) would suit the Pens' needs. It's smart GM-ing.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 02:35 am (UTC)(link)I think that's exactly what people mean when they say he was a reclamation project, though.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 02:36 am (UTC)(link)I realize what they mean, it's the connotations of the term I don't like.
