If only swtfa fandom's fic choices aligned with my likes... I feel so left over in my fandoms atm. :(

I'm curious what will happen hockey fic fandom wise when more of the players from the 2015 draft class actually get to play in the NHL.

Agreed on both fronts...I liked the movie but SWTFA fic just isn't doing it for me, and I v much doubt most of the rookie pairings will survive them all playing for different teams way spread out. Or they'll survive, but none of them is likely to draw a big following.

I think the swtfa fandom is skewing young, which in my bitter and jaded experience tends to mean that a lot of the fic is on the dross-y end of the spectrum. I'm kind of on the lookout for a new active fandom as well, and nothing has piqued my interest yet.

You're probably right that the fandom in general might be younger, and because of that probably more tumblr influenced if that makes sense? I don't mean this in a bad way, just something about the writing that strikes me that way. MCU fandom seemed similar to me in that way.

Never read fic for the movie, but the impression my tumblr dash has given me is that there's just so much wank about everything?

Yeah, I came out of the movie shipping Finn/Poe big time, but writing for the pairing is basically like stepping into a minefield of angry people calling you racist, so there's been a lot of writers moving into safer pastures. And even for pairings I'm not invested in like Reylo, it annoys me to see so much hate and spitefic written just to troll the shippers. TFA fandom is a mess.

I'm the same basically. I'd really like some good Finn/Poe fic, but finding some is worse than looking for a needle in a haystack. That paired with the fact that I can't bring myself to like any of the other ships enough to bother searching out the fic just made me give that fandom a miss as a whole.

Oh yeah. If you ship Reylo, you are the devil, if you ship Hylux (is that the ship name?), you are the racist devil. If you write Finn with anything but a happy ending or anything but a good person, you are racist. If you write Poe Dameron sleeping around, you are racist. I kind of want to write spite fic about Reylo just to annoy the anti-shippers who think people who ship Reylo are abuse apologists.

I ship Finn/Poe and I still think the fandom is reaching heights which the Harry Potter fandom would be proud of.

I came out of the movie going "eh, it was episode 7 again," and haven't ever read Star Wars fanfiction, but I still see enough of the wank to be annoyed and to half-want to start a Finn fic fest. Again, for a fandom I am not in. I just have seen so many posts about how shipping every possible ship is racist, how writing Finn and Poe in any way is racist, and also how shipping the white people isn't racist it's just that no one wants to write PoCs suffering and villain ships are naturally more compelling, to want ALL the Finn fic to exist.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing about people not wanting to write POCs suffering is making me want to tear my hair out because it translates into 95% of the fic that's being written for Finn/Poe (or Finn/Rey etc) being without conflict and thus utterly boring.

Finn has so much good angst potential, too. It is utterly bizarre to think that someone with his background would happily settle into a trouble-free existence while still involved in galactic war.

I know! I came out of the cinema, rubbing my hands together like a movie villain in anticipation of some nice angsty, plotty fic but when I looked? Nothing. I thought I should give it a while, but even now half a year later I've maybe found 2 or 3 fics in that vein that I liked. Oh well, I gave up in the end. I do not care enough to engage with that fandom lol. (Sorry, I'm getting so rant-y, this just struck a nerve!)

Hey, I'm someone who wants a Finn fic fest purely on principle. I'm okay with a little ranting. ;)

(Would Kylo/Finn make fandom's heads explode? Cause, hey, we know how much fandom loves villain ships ...)

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Kylo/Finn would probably be labeled as Very Problematic because it interferes with the apparently not one, but two of the most popular ships in the fandom lol.

But what if they had a torrid affair and THAT's what caused Finn's disillusionment and break with the First Order? It could fit right into canon!

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I would read it!

... actually surprising if there isn't a fic like that because it does not seem like a far fetched fic premise, lol.

That's the thing. Finn/Poe is so fluffy and conflict-free because it's like a thing in Star Wars fandom where if you write it as anything else you're racist. I mean, I don't see the appeal of Hux (that's his name right) but I feel people are writing him and Kylo Ren because they can write dirtybadwrong fic or lots of conflict without pitches and torches being brought out (and yes the general thing of shipping two white villain guys but we're not talking about that right now).

When people on the meme was talking about the lack of dark fic in hockey rpf, I sort of poke the Finn/Poe tag a little because conflict is so absent in it, it's weird.

It seems really ridiculous to me. Like ... you should feel bad if you write the white people! But also, if you don't write the white people, we will pick apart your fic and use every possible inclusion of normal slash tropes as proof that you're racist and should die! I see posts like "PoC are oversexed in the media don't write poe bottoming!!!" or whatever, but I really don't think the corrective action for that is never writing PoC characters and/or never writing PoCs enjoying sex and/or never treating PoCs like real characters who can have realistic flaws. Like, please explain how any of that is fixing anything. It almost feels like they just have to dislike people writing Finn or Poe, but I don't get why that would be.

...do you mean Episode 4? Because TFA was Episode 7.

lol, yes, I'm tired and math is a foreign language.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I was so underwhelmed by TFA, which is disappointing because I'm over waiting for the next hockey RPF renaissance and need a new fandom.

I was pretty underwhelmed as well, but I wasn't really expecting to be wowed, since my assessment of almost every action movie these days is "well that was an action movie." I can't see myself falling for a movie fandom, though I did write a scene for a Zootopia fic that I'll never finish. I'm historically someone who needs 100 hours of canon.

I think hockey is going to have me for a long time, but hockey rpf? Eh. Probably not. I don't write or read fic anymore unless it's for my Ultimate Faves.

I love Finn/Poe, but so much of the fic is bland and not at all to my tastes that I just stopped bothering. I actually really like Poe/Kylo and some of the dirtybadwrong stuff there, but there's also this one author who spams the tag and whose stuff I find generally kind of annoying, so I haven't checked that one in awhile, either.

But yeah, the fandom in general is a bit of a mine field with the shipwar nonsense dialed up to 11. Which isn't that unusual for a large fandom, but I agree that it does seem to be a first fandom for a lot of people, so the wank is taken up a notch above what it usually would be. (Not that people who've been in multiple fandoms can't be wanky, because boy can they ever, but a lot of people seem to mellow a bit the more fandoms they've been through. And if you have a good mix of mellow/non-mellow, it can level things out a bit.)

I like Finn/Poe in theory, but I poked at the tag on AO3 for the first time a few weeks ago, and I don't think I finished a single fic. It was all just so goddamn boring that it couldn't hold my interest at all.

Yeah, I'm old and bitter and have been in fandom since current college age kids were in kindergarten or younger. Hockey was enjoyable because it seemed to draw people who'd been through several fandoms before, and thus the endless cycle of wank didn't happen in precisely the same way (not that it never happens).
