Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I ship Finn/Poe and I still think the fandom is reaching heights which the Harry Potter fandom would be proud of.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I came out of the movie going "eh, it was episode 7 again," and haven't ever read Star Wars fanfiction, but I still see enough of the wank to be annoyed and to half-want to start a Finn fic fest. Again, for a fandom I am not in. I just have seen so many posts about how shipping every possible ship is racist, how writing Finn and Poe in any way is racist, and also how shipping the white people isn't racist it's just that no one wants to write PoCs suffering and villain ships are naturally more compelling, to want ALL the Finn fic to exist.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Finn has so much good angst potential, too. It is utterly bizarre to think that someone with his background would happily settle into a trouble-free existence while still involved in galactic war.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Hey, I'm someone who wants a Finn fic fest purely on principle. I'm okay with a little ranting. ;)
(Would Kylo/Finn make fandom's heads explode? Cause, hey, we know how much fandom loves villain ships ...)
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)But what if they had a torrid affair and THAT's what caused Finn's disillusionment and break with the First Order? It could fit right into canon!
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)... actually surprising if there isn't a fic like that because it does not seem like a far fetched fic premise, lol.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)That's the thing. Finn/Poe is so fluffy and conflict-free because it's like a thing in Star Wars fandom where if you write it as anything else you're racist. I mean, I don't see the appeal of Hux (that's his name right) but I feel people are writing him and Kylo Ren because they can write dirtybadwrong fic or lots of conflict without pitches and torches being brought out (and yes the general thing of shipping two white villain guys but we're not talking about that right now).
When people on the meme was talking about the lack of dark fic in hockey rpf, I sort of poke the Finn/Poe tag a little because conflict is so absent in it, it's weird.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)It seems really ridiculous to me. Like ... you should feel bad if you write the white people! But also, if you don't write the white people, we will pick apart your fic and use every possible inclusion of normal slash tropes as proof that you're racist and should die! I see posts like "PoC are oversexed in the media don't write poe bottoming!!!" or whatever, but I really don't think the corrective action for that is never writing PoC characters and/or never writing PoCs enjoying sex and/or never treating PoCs like real characters who can have realistic flaws. Like, please explain how any of that is fixing anything. It almost feels like they just have to dislike people writing Finn or Poe, but I don't get why that would be.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)...do you mean Episode 4? Because TFA was Episode 7.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)lol, yes, I'm tired and math is a foreign language.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I was pretty underwhelmed as well, but I wasn't really expecting to be wowed, since my assessment of almost every action movie these days is "well that was an action movie." I can't see myself falling for a movie fandom, though I did write a scene for a Zootopia fic that I'll never finish. I'm historically someone who needs 100 hours of canon.
I think hockey is going to have me for a long time, but hockey rpf? Eh. Probably not. I don't write or read fic anymore unless it's for my Ultimate Faves.
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I love Finn/Poe, but so much of the fic is bland and not at all to my tastes that I just stopped bothering. I actually really like Poe/Kylo and some of the dirtybadwrong stuff there, but there's also this one author who spams the tag and whose stuff I find generally kind of annoying, so I haven't checked that one in awhile, either.
But yeah, the fandom in general is a bit of a mine field with the shipwar nonsense dialed up to 11. Which isn't that unusual for a large fandom, but I agree that it does seem to be a first fandom for a lot of people, so the wank is taken up a notch above what it usually would be. (Not that people who've been in multiple fandoms can't be wanky, because boy can they ever, but a lot of people seem to mellow a bit the more fandoms they've been through. And if you have a good mix of mellow/non-mellow, it can level things out a bit.)
Re: Fandom Venting
From: (Anonymous)I like Finn/Poe in theory, but I poked at the tag on AO3 for the first time a few weeks ago, and I don't think I finished a single fic. It was all just so goddamn boring that it couldn't hold my interest at all.
