(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:20 am (UTC)(link)Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:23 am (UTC)(link)Is there really much danger of more white people being cast in Hamilton? It seems like part of the point was to make the Revolutionaries PoC, so they'd probably audition non-white actors, or at the very least audition multiple ethnicities.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:30 am (UTC)(link)There's not that much danger, no, but hint to some of more vocal parts of the fandom that one or two of the roles might have white actors instead in the next run and they go BESERK. That's why Hamilton fandom is tiresome. Also, because I see proponents of "if you're OLD WHY ARE YOU IN FANDOM EW" where Old is defined as 25.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:46 am (UTC)(link)I have seen some things like "white people shouldn't be allowed to watch Hamilton," which seems exhausting enough.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:56 am (UTC)(link)I would say that also seems exhausting, but in a much more consequential way backed by centuries of systemic racism and exclusion from TV and movies?
To be perfectly honest, I think Hamilton should keep it's mostly PoC cast and it seems really unlikely to me that it won't. That doesn't necessarily mean I think Hamilton fandom looks like a fun place to hang out.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:49 am (UTC)(link)Of all the things wrong with Hamilton fandom, I'm side eyeing you hard that "Why won't they cast white people?" is the hill you choose to die on.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:53 am (UTC)(link)They can't get their opinions validated in other places so perhaps they were hoping that this white bread fandom would agree with them.
This white bread fandom concerned with real life rapists and abusers. The opposite of exhausting and uncomfortable, compared to people supporting the casting of POC in the very few theatre roles that were written specifically for them.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:55 am (UTC)(link)It's not a hill I choose to die on. It's the vehemence that even one of the roles (not even the main roles. Any role.) might have to go to a non-PoC is white-washing.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:59 am (UTC)(link)Did you get up in arms about:
1. Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss, who is canonically olive skinned
2. Johnny Depp lying about how he's part Cherokee so he could be in that piece of shit Lone Ranger movie
3. Emma Stone being cast as a fucking part-Asian character
No? Then stfu.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:56 am (UTC)(link)Seriously! And the justification... because people burn out and move on to other projects?? Sure, but... that means once a POC actor leaves a role no more POC actors anywhere are looking for work? Get the fuck out of here. Any white actor has a billion more opportunities for jobs than any POC, so sneering at people for being upset about white people cast in roles written for POC (because that was actually the point of the musical, not "the founding fathers were white!!") misses the point in so many different ways.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:45 am (UTC)(link)Maybe, I guess. Like I said, it's really hard to put a finger on it. Thinking about it, it might be how far removed it is from actual RPF that is my issue. Which doesn't make a lot of sense. I feel like a lot of people who aren't really up on their American history are going to get the impression that a lot of the founding fathers were better people than they were, especially by modern standards of good person vs. bad person. This post still doesn't explain it right. I might be too academically minded for the whole Hamilton thing, I can't turn off the part of my brain screaming about how not accurate it all is.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:52 am (UTC)(link)The musical gives favorable treatment to Hamilton and George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. Aaron Burr is sympathetic. Thomas Jefferson is a colorful dandy, and Madison is Jefferson's lackey.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:53 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I mean, it's the musical AU remix of Hamilton. It's history RPF crack. It's absolutely not aiming for accuracy; it's aiming to use historical figures as tools with which to make its own point and tell its own story.

Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 05:59 am (UTC)(link)That's funny, because historical narratives being fictionalized and reinvented and retold in a way that appropriates them in order to make them speak to a new cultural and political context is exactly what my corner of academia goes crazy about.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 06:03 am (UTC)(link)idk, I thought they were mostly portrayed as varying degrees of low-key to high-key dicks, but none of them seemed like they were stellar people to me. They were tidied up a little bit for narrative purposes, but there's still a fair amount of subtext implying that they're assholes. I'm also fine with pretty liberal historical fiction, though, so ymmv.
Are you maybe objecting to the way that a certain subset of people in the fandom seem to be under the impression that it's a perfectly accurate representation of historical events? Because if so that's a pet peeve I can get behind.
I can't think of any non-wanky way to say this because I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, but saying you're too "academically minded" for something sounds condescending as hell. Like I said, I'm sure that's not what you're going for! But it kind of seems like you're implying that people who enjoyed it aren't academically inclined.
Re: Fandom Venting
(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 06:05 am (UTC)(link)Maybe I was being too forgiving, but I took too "academically minded" as too analytical.

The musical is probably only hard for Thomas Jefferson fans.
I do think it's a bit unquestioning with its "yay America" stance, and I am not comfortable lionizing anyone from history, though that might be more fandom than musical, and every female character in the musical is either in love with Hamilton or fucking him. But it's also really good, and each and every song is an earworm and so dense that you discover a bunch of new fun things every time you listen.
