Maybe, I guess. Like I said, it's really hard to put a finger on it. Thinking about it, it might be how far removed it is from actual RPF that is my issue. Which doesn't make a lot of sense. I feel like a lot of people who aren't really up on their American history are going to get the impression that a lot of the founding fathers were better people than they were, especially by modern standards of good person vs. bad person. This post still doesn't explain it right. I might be too academically minded for the whole Hamilton thing, I can't turn off the part of my brain screaming about how not accurate it all is.

The musical gives favorable treatment to Hamilton and George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. Aaron Burr is sympathetic. Thomas Jefferson is a colorful dandy, and Madison is Jefferson's lackey.

Yeah, I mean, it's the musical AU remix of Hamilton. It's history RPF crack. It's absolutely not aiming for accuracy; it's aiming to use historical figures as tools with which to make its own point and tell its own story.

That's funny, because historical narratives being fictionalized and reinvented and retold in a way that appropriates them in order to make them speak to a new cultural and political context is exactly what my corner of academia goes crazy about.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe so, but that's not what my corner of academia goes nuts over, so.

Then it's not your ~academic mind, it's you. Maybe you're a historian and fair play, I'm picky about representations of the period that I specialize in. But I agree with the anon below who says that saying you're too "academically minded" for something sounds really snotty...and not right, especially because it's exactly the kind of thing a lot of academics in a lot of different disciplines are actually really interested in.

I am a historian, actually (well, one in training, I don't have my Ph.D yet). But I also explained myself more in a different post.

idk, I thought they were mostly portrayed as varying degrees of low-key to high-key dicks, but none of them seemed like they were stellar people to me. They were tidied up a little bit for narrative purposes, but there's still a fair amount of subtext implying that they're assholes. I'm also fine with pretty liberal historical fiction, though, so ymmv.

Are you maybe objecting to the way that a certain subset of people in the fandom seem to be under the impression that it's a perfectly accurate representation of historical events? Because if so that's a pet peeve I can get behind.

I can't think of any non-wanky way to say this because I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, but saying you're too "academically minded" for something sounds condescending as hell. Like I said, I'm sure that's not what you're going for! But it kind of seems like you're implying that people who enjoyed it aren't academically inclined.

Maybe I was being too forgiving, but I took too "academically minded" as too analytical.

That doesn't make it better. There's plenty to be analytical about in Hamilton (I haven't even seen the musical, but it's very existence is fodder for analysis), and in general in fictionalized retellings of things. Isn't that the very case people have been trying to make about the ~importance of fanfic??

But not being able to turn your fact-checker brain off isn't a feature in all circumstances, which is what I thought they were saying, not "the rest of you are so dumb you're actually getting into the narrative storytelling like sheeple."

Ah, that makes sense. I get pulled out of fic for minor details that I know objectively don't matter at all, so I get it. That's just not really at all what I thought of when you said "analytical."

I meant it as me, personally. I'm a history person who drives other people nuts when watching historical movies set in an era I have a specific interest in because I sit there and point out the inaccuracies. I know fellow history people who love it, including a former professor of mine who really knows his shit when it comes to the American Revolution. It still bugs me for some reason.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
So by "academically minded" what you really meant was "nitpicky." Gotcha.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, if that's how you want to interpret what I said.

Re: Fandom Venting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-29 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
If you're that detail-oriented then consider using words that convey the meaning you're trying to express? For instance, "I'm the kind of person who really gets thrown out of a story by historical inaccuracies, so I didn't enjoy Hamilton very much."

Other people's verbal precision is never what meme thinks it should be. They already clarified. We can move on.

It's also almost two thirty in the freaking morning where I'm at and I'm tired. And I wasn't talking about the musical itself, but the fandom and why it bothers me. Which are two different things.

Sorry, man, it's also late where I am and I phrased that assholeishly. Truce? I'd propose some other topic that we might agree on, but that's surprisingly hard to do on this meme. Roman Josi is good-looking? Wayne Gretzky was objectively a pretty good hockey player? Don Cherry is 85 dicks crammed into a loud suit and Mike Milbury is 85 dicks crammed into a boring suit? Surely there must be something all of meme is on board with.

But how many dicks is Jeremy Roenick?

I'd say a slightly smaller number, but still way more dicks than anyone really wants to see in any given situation. Like 75 dicks.

Pierre should shut up? That one's pretty universal.

Also, cilantro belongs on everything. /Wants to watch the world burn

Nooo, for people who don't like it, it's not just a matter of subjective taste, it's literally a genetically inherited trait, it tastes like soap to us! Don't hate!!

(In case it's not clear, I'm talking about cilantro and not Pierre.)

You won me over with the idea of a truce when you reminded me how good looking Roman Josi is, because damn son.
